Almost 2015, and that means it's time to start thinking about what you are going to apply for next year.

Here's my shore list:

NM Oryx, Ibex and Pronghorn

AZ Bighorn Sheep and pronghorn

NV all three sheep and antelope and mt goat

WY Mt goat, Antelope and mule deer

TX just buying lottery tags for the super hunts

WA just buying lottery tags for the super hunts

CA elk, antelope, and bighorns probably going to hunt Catalina island if I can get a booking. I'd like to hunt blacktails and black bear in November with MUM if it works out.

Wyoming- deer and elk (have max points)
Wyoming- antelope (have 4 of 5 points)
Idaho- deer and elk
Utah- desert sheep (15 points not near enough)
Utah- elk and general deer

That will probably be it.

Elk, deer, pronghorn, ibex, oryx, and desert bighorns in New Mexico.

I will also put two kids in for youth hunts for elk, deer, and pronghorn; maybe oryx.

Probably pronghorn in Wyoming.

Hopefully hogs and deer somewhere in Texas.

I'm not sure I can remember all of the states/species I apply for each year, just off the top of my head? But I do know this, over the years I have drawn several good permits - including my Nevada Desert Bighorn tag that I used to take a great ram just 3 weeks ago.

One thing's for sure, if you don't apply - you will never draw.

If you are unsure of what to do, consider the application service offered by "Huntin Fool". https://www.huntinfool.com/

Having lived on the East coast my whole life I have never understood how anyone can ever figure out a multi-species/multi-state application process.

I've dabbled in buying preference points in Wyoming 4 out of the last 6 years for elk, but have never gotten into the whole process to the level you all are involved.

Out of curiosity, when you all eventually draw a tag do you hunt the area yourself or get a guide? I think that's my excuse year in and out for not applying. The overall cost of years of tag applications tempered with knowing that if I did in fact draw I would either have to hire an outfitter, or basically go in blind. I have always just save my cash and gone hunting in Africa.

The military does provide lots of vacation time in theory, but trying to get time off for a scouting trip plus hunting during our last decade of overseas adventures is nigh on impossible.

Maybe that should be my New Year's resolution, start applying. I will check out the Huntin' Fool and in addition, does anyone have any experience with Cabela's TAG services?

Besides visiting the Huntin' Fool and reading a half dozen different state's big game regulations, where does one even start to figure out what states to apply for?

Truthfully, I do want to start, but I don't even know what questions to ask.

35whelenman, So as not to hijack the thread, I sent you a PM with some info on getting started. At least my take on it.

I put in for, or buy points in:

Sheep in MT, UT, CO, AZ, NV, WA, NM, AK, CA and OR
Elk in AZ, NV, UT, WY, CA and CO
Mule Deer in UT, CO, AZ, WY
Goat in MT
Antelope in WY, and AZ
Moose in MT

I am forgetting a couple, but that is the gist of it.

Mule Deer: OR, ID, WY, CO, AZ and NV.
Elk: OR, ID, WY, CO, UT, NM, NV and AZ.
Antelope: OR, ID, WY, NM, NV and AZ.
Sheep: OR, MT, WY, UT, NM, NV and AZ.
Moose: MT and WY.
Ibex and Oryx: NM.

35whelenman, I think the way to approach it is to figure out what species you want to hunt and what your desire is, meaning, opportunity vs. trophy potential.
If you have any specific questions feel free to PM me and I will tell you what I can.
Best of luck.
