NOT. Unless you feel sad for the bears... http://www.msnbc.com/news/977560.asp?0sl=-10 If anyone was "askin' for it", that Treadwell fruit-loop was. Canuck

Canuck, I thought you had come over all "sensitive" for a moment! Is this the guy tried tried to build a bear proof armour suit? I remember seeing a programe about him a while back...he eventually built this "suit" and I recall his greatest danger was if he fell over as he could not get up on his own. I can't remember if he managed to provoke a bear encounter or not, but I seem to think they ran away before he could even get remotely close... Regards, Pete

No, that was a Canadian nut-job with too much time and money. He never did manage to get a bear to attack him. He could still be trying for all I know, though. This was that other nut-job on National Geographic and Discovery Channel that was trying to save the bears in Alaska. Every summer he went to live with them in the park and photographed and filmed them at close range. Not all Canadian's are liberal bleeding hearts. I giggled like a school girl when I heard this story! Now if only those Kamchatka Brown Bears would just eat that other couple of crazed whack-jobs that live with them (by projecting their love), I'd be really tickled. Canuck, It seems bears attract these type of nutters. I recall another program where a British photgrapher went to either Alaska or Canada and joined up with some bear expert. He got this photographer in real close to the bears and the couple of times they got aggressive and started to "charge" he would simply stand up and put his hand out like a policeman holding up the traffic...he said the bears "understood his body language"...Personally,I suspect bears are bright enough to be wary of nutters too! By the end of a week or so filming they had managed to get a sow accustomed to hanging out near their camp and at least accepting their presence. Then they dicided that as it was bear hunting season next week it was perhaps not in the bears best interest! They eventually decided to scare it off by firing a shotgun over its head... All in all a rather pointless exercise all around.. Regards, Pete [ 10-09-2003, 02:04: Message edited by: Pete E ]

Personally I think we all owe the Bears a round of gratitude. Instead of putting them down, can you Alaskans let us borrow some of them for downtown Portland, Salem and Eugene? We will send them back, but will have to apologize about all the 'Liberal Shit' they bring back with them. The story is really sad, but how do you feel sorry for people getting hurt or killed when it is their own stupidity that caused it???

Unfortunately the Dip shit got what he wanted !! I'm just curious as to what Caliber the Semi-auto pistol that was used to shoot the first bear was. Sounds like it was a 9mm or a 10MM, 11 rounds fired? Any of you Alaskains know what the rangers carry up there?

Not only was Treadwell dangerous to himself, but he put his girlfriend in harm's way. That is criminal. I can't think of a worse way to die than be ripped apart and eaten alive by a wild animal. One of them had to get it first, so the other got to watch. It's unspeakable.

On the news tonight they said that there is an audio tape of the mauling. The girlfriend did the recording as the guy was being mauled. She starts yelling for Treadwell to play dead then after a while yells for him to fight the bear. [ THREE MINUTES OF RECORDING ].

Canuck, Thanks for that. I will rest easier now, knowing that two less nut cases are harrassing the bears. And they were not grizzlies. They were brownies on the Alaska Peninsula. The headline would be better as "Brownie Mauls Misguided Boy and Girl Scout Wannabes to Death." Sadly the brownie with nuts as ingredient is now over done.

I read in the story that his girlfriend was from Boulder, CO and they would be proud to be bear sh*t. Well, if you mess with the bull(bear) you get the horns(teeth, claws). The world is much better off with one less animal loving, tree huggin' save the world from itself Boulderite. These people got what they deserve. NO sympathy from me. My only problem with this story is that all of the other animal rights people are going to make these two jerks into heros. Elk Country PS. I wonder if the bear thinks that people taste like chicken?! [ 10-10-2003, 00:41: Message edited by: Elk Country ]

Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid! The ADN article stated that Treadwell made it SOP to go out and confront any bear that came into his camp at night. Wrong move, Slick! When will folks learn that God made this world a certain way; and they can't change it into an animated Disney movie, no matter how hard they try. As I posted on HA: Reality bites! RSY

I know one thing that if I was a parent of Amie Huguenard I would be going after Treadwell's estate with everything I could. Amie trusted Treadwell and his so called knowledge of bears. He let her down. The latest news is that Treadwell had video and still cameras set out around camp. One was in a backpack and Treadwell had a voice actuated mic button in his pocket and they at least got the attack on sound tape. They haven't released much yet but enough to know that the bear attacked Treadwell first. The report goes on to state that you can hear her yelling at Treadwell to play dead then moments later yelling for him to fight back. The report is on http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/2543551/detail.html if you want to read it. It's happenings like this that I carry a firearm(rifle or handgun) no matter where we go, even to one of the national parks. Rather be judged by twelve than carried by six(or less). I don’t trust bears, no matter what color they are or what specie they are. Lawdog

I saw an interview with this nut case on, I think "60 Minutes" when he was asked why he did not use a little sense, and at least carry a gun for protection. Even the ultra liberal media interviewer knew the Brown bear was the most dangerous game animal in North America! Treadwell's reply was: "I would never kill a bear to save my own life! The bears are not the dangerous ons, humans are, and I'll die trying to keep people for harming the bears!" Well he did exactly that! This idiot would crawl on his hands, and knees up to full grown Browns in the Katmai Park, and try to touch them, while his girlfriend filmed it! She was as stupid as he was, and the bears are better off without those two dipp-shits! The bad thing is the two bears involved were shot! I have some experience with the Katmai Bears! We hunt in their migration route from the park to the hills where they den up. These bears are big boys, and are used to people from fishing around them all summer. When they come through our hunting area about 40 miles west of the park in lete September, they show signs of being very agressive. The last time we hunted at Sow Lake, we lost three caribou of our own,all our food, and two of some other hunters who left their meat at our lake for pick-up. I certainly watched them very carefully, and I was carrying a FN Mauser 375 H&H rifle. They should play that tape at all the PeTA meetings, and too bad it was not on video for them to get some idea what a non-Disney bear acts like! Like I said, the sad part is the bears had to pay the price for Treadwell, and his friend's stupidity!

The shit he got away with is incredible and its to bad he didn't get film footage of being ate. This asshole getting killed, pretty much goes along with what bear experts have said for years. Healthy bears usually don't feed on humans, the old sick and juvenile bears intentionally prey on humans. The show he had on the discovery channel, showed him chasing three juvenile bears from his camp, after he allowed them to circle his camp for hours. The fuckhead was living on barrowed time.

quote:The move to domestic animals came from wild animals. Yes big genetic change I agree. However, dogs have been associated with humans for 1000's (100,000 I believe, but not quite sure) of years and are not really in the same category as 'raised in captivity' as you put it. I chuckled when I saw this on the news and it reminded me of a photograph I saw Namibia, Africa in 1990. A guy walked up to a pride of lions in order to photograph them at close range. He managed to throw his camera to his buddy who had wisely chosen to remain in their vehicle. The last photograph developed was of the pride "lunching" on the guy. Apparently, this same fellow was well known photographing lions like this and "understood" them well enough to do it safely. There is definitely a lesson to be learned here.

Well--you guys can put me in a frying pan but....if he's the guy who's films I think I saw, I was fascinated by the footage he shot. Saying all the crap about he had it coming, and it's all great that "he got what he deserved" well I think that's a bunch of crap from guys that I have to wonder if they could leave their guns behind and live with the bears for a few days. Don't get me wrong--I'm an avid hunter and I WOULD LOVE A BEAR HUNT in Alaska. BUT, I still can enjoy getting to know the bear better. To me saying he's an idiot and it's great he's animal dung is pretty much saying that a stock car driver, astronaut, Blue Angel Pilot etc etc are all the same. None of these people are really "hero's" in my book unless they are doing something that saves another's life. They're pretty much "thrill seekers" and not a one of them think this is their last trip. I feel sorry for them and their families. I didn't know these people from Adam and neither do most of you. It's just a sad deal--pretty much the way the post should have continued in my book.

Just another hypocrite, he's responsible for the deaths of two bears. His selfish curiousity placed him in that situation. He of all people believed that an old hungry grizzly with failing teeth may resort to "abnormal behavior" to get food. Maybe some of the other "naturalists" will stay the fuck out of the woods. It never ceases to amaze me that many educated, probably hi IQ people are fucking numb.

Sidenote of interest...Fish & Game sent in their bear expert to review the scene and the other bears had already eaten the bear carcasses in only 2 days. There were bears all over the site and they were kind of worked up. Sounds like opening the gates at Jurassic Park.
