well...you got any pics...

Okay so Atcheson is a little busy so I got the scoop...

He apparently guided a NY hunter who drew an out of state tag for sheep in MT.

Anybody know who this hunter is...I feel a little bad posting his pics but this looks like a like a pretty old ram...

Can any of you sheep hunters comment on age?

I keep applying for Big Horn in MT as it is probably the only way I will ever get one...I think some jealosuy is coming out on my part.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

In his early 60s... Big Grin

The sheep looks about 6-7 years old- hard to tell from the photos.

Mike,

Thanks for posting the pics. This was an opening day Bighorn Ram after several days of scouting. The Ram taped at 41" x 16 1/2" by 37 3/4" x 16 3/8" and green scored 194.5. Pretty hard to beat a great sheep hunt. O'Connor had it right. By the way. The ram was 8 1/2 years old.

Those who want to go sheep hunting should go now while you are able. It's not getting any cheaper and none of us are getting any younger.I just wish it was not so expensive so more hunters could experience this great hunt. Have a great Fall!

Kieth,
Great Ram.
I sure hope your wife is doing fine.
Your PH was in my camp a day or two after the charge. My Ph waas killed a few weeks later in a car crash while comming home from a fishing trip.
We sometimes just do not realize how fragile life can be.
Again I hope she is recovering well.

N E 450 No 2,

Thanks for your kind words. My wife Niki is doing great. She is back at it. We went to Cameroon in June and hunted Bongo, Elephant Buffalo etc.... and while she was not succesful in taking a dwarf buff ( they are real hard to find)she did well.

She also helped me pack out this sheep three miles to my truck. She carried over 40 lbs of meat! Not bad for someone that nearly lost her leg/life just over 15 months ago. I don't think I've ever known a tougher person. We have lots of elk and deer hunting coming up so we are looking forward to that. Dettorre is even suppose to show up. Prepare for more tales........Good luck to you this fall. Keith

Great sheep Kieth!
A guy could ask for something better than 194 but it sure wouldn't be right! From the sage and creosote it looks to be a Missouri Breaks ram, es verdad? I'm glad your wife is doing so well. So many people in the hunting fraternity followed that incredible story over the past year +. My partner couldn't close on a nice ram up in the Beartooths opening weekend. Oh well------------ at least I didn't have to be pack horse.

Keith. No disrespect meant, but I can see no way that ram scores that high. It is a gorgeous sheep.

Keith, Congrats on a beauty of a ram. Your hunter is a lucky guy!

RE: the question of age, the annuli are quite easy to see in the bottom pic. I count him as 8 1/2 too.

Cheers,
Canuck

BighornBreath,

Unfortunately the pics I took do not fully give the viewer a real appreciation for the Ram's actual size. I have a picture of the same Ram that I'll get Dettorre to post for us. I believe you will see it's ability to score........

Canuck, We had F&G saying it was 6 but I think he was not so up on annuli.....

lhook7,

Annuli are the annual growth rings that form on sheep and goats horns each year of life. As the animal gets older the rings become closer together as it's growth slows down. It can sometimes be tricky to count the actual rings on some animals as the horns in general have natural ridges that form and can mislead the untrained eye.

That is an old brute for sure. I love the last pic. I'd pay just to see some of the fights that scarred those horns.
