It is 7:02 a.m. and I have just read, rather quickly, this thread. Maybe too quickly but one comment that rather stands out to me is someone criticizing a young girl for shooting an elk twice with a 30-06 instead of just once .. I am 100% for someone shooting an elk twice !!! If it is still standing .. or even down with its head up ... finish the animal off quickly !!!

I think a 6.5x55 with the 155 gr mega tip lapula bullet and lots of practice would work on elk for a young girl.I dont know if the throat on a 260 remington would be long enough to shoot this bullet. The 155 gr mega tip in the 6.5x55 is the bullet of choice for moose in sweden.I think this is about the smallest gun that should be legal for elk.The friend of mine whos daugher killed the moose with her 243 and shooting it so many times and the moose taking so long to die said she would never use a 243 on moose again.I think the 243 for big game even deer is like shooting turkeys with a .410 shotgun. It can be done but you should be an expert shooter to do it not a beginner.I love the 155 gr lapula mega tip in my 264 win mag.Another gut that does not kick that much and is small is a 375 winchester in their model 94 big bore.If you limited shots to 125 yards or less it would be fine for elk.I set up a friends son who hunts with me with one.I loaed the 220 gr hornady bullets at around 2350 fps and he shot it fine.He was only about 10 years old and weighed 80 pounds .You dont need to use a gun so big it will scare her but one that big enough to kill what ever your shooting with one shot. The 243 is not one of my favorite rifles .I have two of them now I only use them on varmits.I shot a few does with it just fine.I lost two of the biggest buck I ever shot with it shooting them right behind the shoulder. The blood trail frm a 243 usually amounts to drops instead of a good blood trail.I wait too long and lost two nice bucks when I was young.I switched to a semiautomatic 30-06 and it was better but jamed and was not very accurate.I finally got a good Ruger model 77 and have used it for over 20 something years all with one shot kills.I think there should be 10 times more girls and women hunting. If we got the women on our side hunting would be around forever.I am training my girlfriend who is very small and I am breaking her in easy.I started with a 22 lr then a 250 savage next a 375 win model 94.They are making contender barrels in that 375 win also from midway usa.Thats a small gun that packs some punch with little kick.

You hit it right on the head Wink You did read it too quickly. I was not criticizing the "young girl" for shooting an elk twice, we were merely discussing calibers and most of that post was in sarcasum incase you didn't get it. I am 100% for if the first round doesn't get her done, do it again. thumb

animal bull

It would appear you're having to "explain it" to almost everyone but yourself.
Sarcasm is a tempting and common crutch to use in an attempt to shore up a "discussion" that has just went quite poorly.
However, I am encouraged that you did not resort to an emotional assault against Scruffy for this latest ah, um, er, "mis-reading."

I was not critical of your "young girl" as his post stated I think that is quite obvious if you care to read it, but no matter your lastest attempt is as lame as the last. And the later part of that particular post was in sarcasum, no explanation needed please refer to an earlier post for you to the reasons you didn't get it Roll Eyes

The "dicussion" as you call it started to go poorly when your godlyness condesendingly stated "I wanna run with the big dogs, but I want to use my little dog tools." I'm sure the gentleman that started the thread and his lady friend will do just fine with "their own tools" and I wish them luck on their hunt.

I'm glad we both agree on that, he's going with the modified 30-06 for her --- a sound decision and one that I gave him kudos for in the "big dog/little dog" post and BTW, for elk IMHO it's near the start of the "big dog" rifles.
cheers

The 7mm08 would be my minimum.

That's great that you and your wife have shot a lot of deer/antelope with it. How many elk have you shot with it?
