Looking for opinions on an outfitter for a mountain lion hunt in the USA. Who would you recommend? I am looking to do a rifle hunt in 2017 or 2018. Thank you in advance. Bob

You will probably get many responses which
I am sure will be good.

I hunted mountain lion with Ben Wohlers from Hamilton
Montana. I took a 170 pound cat the first day.

I was very impressed with everything about the hunt. Send
me a PM and I'll give you more details and pics.

Check with JT Robbins at Allout Guiding $ Outfitting in CO.
He'll work hard for you and has good dogs and good country to hunt.

I would look at quotas from the game departments.

Some states will let you take two cats.

Thanks for the replies so far. I see you have to take a test in Colorado to hunt Mountain Lions. Ha, I haven't taken a test in many years.

Give a call to Joe Troyer of Little Joe's Big Game Hunting. He hunts mainly the Capitan, NM area. I hunted bears with him the last two years and he has some good dogs.

Oh, you have to take a mountain lion test in New Mexico also. beer

I beleive Idaho, Wyoming and Montana are over the counter for tags.

Most of the rest of the states require the applicaiton for a permit. Maybe Nevada you can just buy a tag.

The NM test is pretty simple, too. I took it and passed without studying. Common sense male vs female recognition for the most part if I recall correctly.

If you aren't afraid to do some hiking, Rocky McBride of Alpine, Texas is one of the best cat men in the world. His hunts are on dry ground and really show his skill as a houndsman. The hunting is entirely on giant private ranches where you won't see another hunter (or likely even another person). All you need is a hunting license, as mountain lions are classified as varmints in Texas. No season, no limit, as the species is well managed by the limited number of people who are competent to catch them.

And they are varmints, leading a very private life where they are rarely seen. A rancher friend on nearby Lake Lavon got out of the cattle business due to lion predation on his calves.

A friend of mine with a ranch in central Texas calls them in with varmint calls. He says it is good sport and I believe him. Of course, at last count he had taken 13 leopards in Africa and so big cats are routine for him.
No, he does not guide for hunters.

Plus One on CRShelton's comments. If you can hook up with an outfitter in the Big Bend/Trans-Pecos area of west Texas, you will have a great chance of getting a cat.

+1 more for JT Robbins. I got my tom with him our first day out, a couple of years ago.

The hardest thing about the Colorado Lion test is getting it to work on the computer. I couldn't get it to work on my computer, a Public Library computer, the computers at my girlfriend's apartment complex, and even the computers at a Colorado F&G office.

You're over thinking this thing. Get yourself some Nike sneakers and run any public jogging trail in California. The cats come to you.

I hunted last January with Tyler Bowler Hunting out of the St. George, Utah area. Great outfitter, with talented dogs, and access to lots of great hunting land. Took this Tom on the first day. I was very happy with my experience.

Been at it a while, and does a great job.

Nevada has mountain lion tags over the counter with, IIRC, a year round season. Non-resident cost is $104.

Kalin Brown, out of Pioche, Nevada; is a very good lion hunter. High success and big cats.

Contact Mark Young on this sight and go with Bruce Ducan near Priest Lake ID. You'll have a great time.

Montana region 1 (northwest corner) is probably the premier area for lion hunting in the country but its permits have been by drawing only since about 2006. And beware, because if you APPLY for the drawing you can NOT buy an over the counter tag anywhere else in the state for that year.

I would second Rocky McBride, Ive known him for years and he hunted on a ranch I leased for about 5 years (Rosillas Mt. Ranch south or Marathon)...He is the best Lion and bear hunter Ive ever known.. He lives in Alpine, Texas.

That area is the best Lion population I know off and Ft. Davis has a decent bear population or did when I lived there some 30 years ago. No season, no limits on Lion or preditors.
