Bear Attacks Man During Wisconsin Hunting Trip

Author: John Lauritsen
October 1, 2018

WASCOTT, Wis. (WCCO) — The tables turned on a hunter this weekend when a bear attacked him.

Tye Carlson survived, but he ended up with stitches over much of his body. The bear weighed more than 350 pounds. The attack happened near Wascott, Wisconsin.

“Beautiful animal when he came out. Then whoops, ‘I think he’s going to get me.’ He got me,” Carlson said.

Carlson has been hunting black bears for more than 40 years. During that time, he has never felt threatened by a bear – that all changed on Saturday.

“He popped out and he wasn’t going to stop. He just ran me over and started biting on me,” Carlson said.

The bear was being chased by members of Carlson’s hunting party, but it was on him before he could shoot.

“I’m a big guy and I couldn’t push him around,” Carlson said.

Sometimes you eat the bear and sometimes the bear eats you.

I am amazed this does not happen more often, but a couple times this year, so far.

Me to especially when getting in close to a bear fighting with the hounds.

They tend to be really pissed off about then.

When one is in that situation one needs to be shooting fast, accurate and with the idea.

That one needs that bear down and dead right now.

Not only for the hunters sake but the hounds also.

A friend of mine dropped a 350lb bear out of a tree.

As the bear was falling he backed up to get out of the way and tripped.

When the bear hit the ground it reached out and grabbed him by the foot.

Four puncture wounds before his back up shooter finished it off.

That was a couple of weeks ago he is still limping.

I had several people complain when I jumped in and placed a bullet in the bears brain.

Most don't understand how bad things can go very fast.

Put a black coat of hair on him, he could pass for a bear himself. Wow, torn all over like that, I bet he was fighting pretty good.

I'm taking one of my kids bear hunting in a couple of days. The houndsmen who have been doing it for many years all have stories. I don't think any of them have been in the news, but then I don't know that any of them have ended up in the hospital either.

Anyone who doesn't believe a black bear can be dangerous is a fool.

Familiarity often breeds contempt.

When one is around many bears and nothing ever happens.

One tends to start believe that nothing ever well.

A old saying is 99.9 percent of bears well not cause you any trouble.

The problem is one does not know if the 10th of a percent well be the first bear you meet or the last one.
