I've had the tags off and on over the years, but will intentionally hunt bears this year here in Oregon. The fall season opens Aug. 1, and we have a heck of a lot of blackies here in southern Oregon. I plan to glass near moisture and berry sources, and hope to find a nice young 200-pounder. I'll be shooting my CZ in 9,3X62 with 270-grain Speer handloads -- plenty o' gun. A major concern is meat care, as the daytime temps are in the 90s here, so I will need to get blackie dressed, skinned and in the cooler within hours. Any other Lower 48 black free-range bear hunters out there? (Not talking about you Maine guys who shoot over baits. No offense, just a different style of hunting.) There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t. – John Green, author | ||
