It was a nice day so I decided it would be a good evening to go coyote hunting. I got my stuff together and went out to the woods. After setting up I waited about a half hour before I started to call. I started out with a dying rabbit call and nothing... After a bit, I relocated and tried again. I started to call and heard something coming toward me. I put the call down and got the gun ready. I had placed my decoy in a small clearing in front of me and it appeared that the sound was moving toward that. The only problem with the situation is that what came out of the brush wasn't a coyote, it was a mountain lion.

My question to all of those that have hunted mountain lion is; is it uncommon for them to respond to a dying rabbit call?

Nope, they're a predator and if they're hungry they'll come to something that sounds like a free meal. It may have even thought it was a fawn in distress.

I've called in several cats with rabbit calls. The deeper raspier ones seem to have been when I get cats in the set. That may be exactly what TG said about it sounding like a fawn. They scare the hell out of me when they come it. If there is a possibility of them being around, I try to make sure I have someone to watch my back!!

Yep i was reading an article about an outfitter in Arizona? He routinly calls in bears for his clients. After hearing a slight noise behind him and turning to find a lion only a few yards away. He always puts something solid at his back.
You never know what a wild animal is going to do. Most predators are going to atleast investigate a potential easy meal.

I have walked in the foot prints of the elephant, listened to lion roar and met the buffalo on his turf. I shall never be the same.

Early summer I use a fawn in distress call. I think I have called in just as many bear as coyote with it.

Yes! I already contacted the DNR to report it. They said they were going to go out there today and do an investigation. I looked around where I saw it, but I didn't find any tracks though.

I know what you mean. The first thing they tried telling me was that it couldn't be a cougar. Probably just a big coyote or a stray dog or something. I told them I had never seen a coyote or a dog that was 7ft long! I had my phone in my pocket but it all happened so quick. Even if I wanted to, I don't think I could have gotten pic.
