After a successful morning of culling two does, Jack, Gary and I headed to the stand. About 4:30, three does start heading in from the north canyon wall. 60 yards behind them a malformed 7 point is in pursuit. Gary glasses him and calls Jack to take the shot on this cull buck. The buck smells trouble and makes a bat turn back up the north canyon wall. Then he makes his last mistake and stops. Jack's Savage 308 barks and deposits a 165gr TSX in his neck at 300 yards. Down Goes Buck!!! I am sitting on the left side of Jack with my DPMS 308 at the ready. When we see the buck go down, Gary says “take those does”. They started running up and to the left. At Gary’s words, I let the Panther loose. First shot miss, second shot miss, third shot doe down, fourth shot doe staggered, fifth shot doe down. There was no sixth shot as the third doe was gone. From the first to the last shot about 20 seconds had elapsed. The longest shot I took was about 225 yards. This was a cull hunt only. I quit counting deer when I reached 30 on the first day. We did see several 180 plus class bucks. This took place in Sterling County Texas this past week. Many thanks to the ranch manager Gary for allowing us this opportunity. My freezer will be filled. “I am an American; free born and free bred, where I acknowledge no man as my superior, except for his own worth, or as my inferior, except for his own demerit.” Theodore Roosevelt (1858 – 1919)

Sounds like a hog hunt in the deep South. Hard times create strong men. Strong men create good times. Good times create weak men. And, weak men create hard times.
