How about this:

"The fenced-in 700-acre preserve, which charges hunters to kill trophy elk, is also home to white-tailed deer and a handful of moose — including Pete. He was adopted as a calf after dogs attacked his mother and a sibling."

Hell, why go out Weest?
Peter.

Michigan has a similar area just north of me that has Elk, and we have an annual Elk hunt. It's a draw. I've applied for years, but never drew. The area extends from Gaylord, 25 miles north of Grayling, to Atlanta, to the east.

I live in VT and had never heard of this preserve until today's newspaper article about Peter the moose.

There's Wild Hill (it has a dismal website) in VT where they have bison and boar on a couple thousand fenced acres but I thought that was it for preserves in VT.

Oxon, nice to see an "on the spot" perspective. I just thought that 700 acres was a bit on the small side!

Yeah, 700 acres is "small" but we're a small state. Depending on where it is, the 700 acres can really test a hunter - the mountainous and densely-wooded terrain can be extremely rugged.

Nowadays, 2000 acres would be very hard to assemble. Also, state law has changed and no more hunting preserves can be established in Vermont. Wild Hill was grandfathered in.

At least as far as the boar go, the Wild Hill experience is quite authentic and not much different than a European boar hunt.

AS someone who grew up on about 130 acres of land in dairy and woods country -and who roamed over perhaps nearly a thousand acres of neighbors property since childhood and later as a deer and bird hunter -the idea of "hunting" elk on 700 acres has all the earmarks of shooting fish in a barrel -but,I guess, that's just me.

It's just a few miles up the road from me, and Dave Lawrance ( pete's caretaker) is a good friend of mine. I was in there to see pete the moose and the other animals just a little while ago. There's a shit load of elk in there! Would not be any challenge to shoot one. The deer know dave's truck and are not afraid and will come eat bread he throws to them in the winter months, but like any whitetail, are wary of other rigs and once any shooting starts are scarce. I think there are a few fallow and sika deer, and the sika's are ghosts to find. If anyone is actually interested I can give you dave's phone number. The owner of the property Doug Nelson is a dairy farmer, and started the fenced property as something differant to dabble in. He has several farms, a restraunt on the Quebec border where they serve elk ect and other investments I dont even remember what. He's a half-ass relative of mine and has one farm neighboring ours, so I know first hand about the place.
