30ott6 came down for a short mule deer hunt. He shot the largest buck we saw.

Around here we let them grow a couple more years.

Ann, yes that is about a 1" sticker on his right antler. He had the makings of another on his left.

MD, while he is a nice mature buck, we grow a lot larger in this country, hence the skull plate.

Maybe John will tell the story when he gets back to a computer.

Thanks SBT. We had a great time. Shot the deer this past Saturday. We rode horses in to the area from our base camp. Wasn't quite daylight yet, overcast skies (threatening to rain or snow) and about 7 am.

We were at an elevation of about 8,000'. We had stopped so that I could adjust my saddle and as I was doing that, Scott spotted the buck. Scott suggested I shoot him as he was going to go deer hunting again.

The buck was about 300 yards out with a ravine dividing us. I was using my 30.06 loaded with 180 grain Barnes TSX's. The buck was getting nervous so with my scope on 6X I sat down, pput the crosshairs just behind his shoulder and pulled the trigger. I thought I hit him good but he turned around and came downhill, stopped and had his head down. Now he was about 250 yards away. I shot again and he took off running. I heard him crash into the Aspens below us just above the ravine.

Scott and I mounted up and moments later, found him deader than a doornail on the hillside.

While I gutted him, Scott went on foot to see if he could find another. This buck's heart was completely blown up, mush like, as were his lungs. I found only one hole in him so I suspect it was the second shot that did him in. I believe my first shot clipped his spine as his spine showed some damage. At any rate, it was a perfectly placed shot (probably just lucky) behind the shoulder with no meat damage. Scott and I packed him on my horse and we hiked out. As we walked, it began to rain and even a little light snow. It was a perfect day!!!

I took him in yesterday to have him processed and he weighed 148.5 pounds, skinned, gutted and beheaded.

And that, ladies and gentleman, is the story of my 2005 deer hunt with my buddy SBT!

I typically use the 168 TSX but I have some 180's to try. Geronimo also has a great load in his .06 using the 180.

What is your load?

I must be losing my touch. I thought that deer would have been a 175 deer. Hell, if I knew he was a 185 buck, I'd of shot him!

Too bad his left beam was short and that he didn't have any ones. Nice buck nonetheless.
