Here is the rifle I hope to take my elk with this year. I will be carrying my .30-06 as back up but I'll be hunting a lot in dark timber and this little rifle is just begging to be used. I will be adding this Rice peep sight to the bolt and I do have a new safety on order. This rifle was missing the safety when I purchased it. I've got the load that will hold 2" at 100 for three rounds, hoping this sight will get them a little tighter. .30-40 Krag loaded with 180 Grain Hornady RN, just the RX for Elk!

Hope you wack one right through the lungs....uphill from the truck and in snow... Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue. What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

I got rid of my Krag some time ago...thought it was the ugliest rifle I had ever owned....but it always shot well and functioned smoothly. With that sight set up it should be very quick on target good luck.

I agree with the caliber and can understand you wanting to use such a great rifle. Problem is there is not that many of those still around. Not sure I would take it to the rough and tumble world of elk hunting. That's a really nice rifle. Free men should not be subjected to permits, paperwork and taxation in order to carry any firearm. The rifle has been extremely sporterized and quite well done IMO, that make is a shooter. However, I can't disrespect the rifle by leaving it in the safe. This is a rifle that can be restored later as the receiver is still intact, and if it can't because of lack of parts availabilty, it will have had a good life in the field being used as a rifle should. I will do my best however not to keep her in similar condition to what you see in these pictures, best I can promise you.

I don't know if it's nostalgia or what, but I have a soft spot for rifles like that. Best of luck on your hunting...and don't forget to post pictures! Bobby Μολὼν λαβέ The most important thing in life is not what we do but how and why we do it. - Nana Mouskouri

Respect for a rifle is to carry it in the field, away from the dark dank recesses of a gun safe. Let it see the quakies and blue holes of spruce and fir. 30-40 throughthe ribs and all are honored! Don't limit your challenges . . . Challenge your limits

taylor That is a Classic. I hope you get a Monster Elk, but ANY elk killed with that rifle would be a Trophy. A buddy of mine had a 30/40 Krag Carbine and I shot it on several occasions. They are one of the slickest bolt actions around. The 30/40 with a 180 is plenty enough for elk. When you hunt and kill somthing with a rifle like that... it just seems right... Hey Looking forward to Elk season and I hope we can get into them so you can put that 30/40 to good use. I haven't decided for sure yet but I may leave my standard elk rifle at home this year and carry an "oddball" as well. I'm hoping for big snows for our late elk hunt.

You know you can't leave your 06 at home either. Never know when you might need a backup rifle! Looking forward to it as well.

A very good plan. Some rifles deserve to be taken out and used for hunting regardless of collectibility.
