Deer Hunter Dies After Plunge Into Sinkhole
Pulaski County Man Called Wife, Then Vanished
Sep. 18, 2013

A deer hunter walking in a wooded area in rural Pulaski County died Monday when he fell into a deep sinkhole, authorities say.

The incident occurred Monday evening while Curtis S. Powelson, 31, was bowhunting close to his home off Red Oak Lane near the Buckhorn area.

Around dusk, Powelson made contact with his wife, saying he had just shot a deer and was returning to the woods in an attempt to track the animal.

When he failed to return home, his wife reported him missing to the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department.

Law enforcement and firefighters then began a late-night search, which ended shortly after 3 a.m., when Powelson’s body was discovered at the bottom of a large sinkhole just a short distance from his home.

The sinkhole was about the size of a car at ground level and was estimated to be approximately 65 to 70 feet deep.

After examining the scene and speaking with the property owner, authorities assume the sinkhole recently opened, possibly during heavy rains last month.

It is believed Powelson did not see the opening before falling into it because it was hidden behind tall foliage, and the light was poor, according to the sheriff’s department.

The death has been ruled accidental by Pulaski County Assistant Coroner Michael McCart.

That is just horrible. It reminds me of a rabbit hunter who died trying to retrieve a rabbit that he had shot. The wounded rabbit ran down a hole and the hunter tried to reach down to grab it. When he did he got stuck head down in the hole and died.

A sobering thought: discretion is the better part of valor.

Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt.

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

Seems there's a whole lotta ways for a person to die. Too bad this happened, sounds like it was meant to be though.
Best to his family.

I met this hunter, Labor Day weekend, at a cookout in White Pine, MI. He was here visiting his brother, who lives here. A 12yr Marine, still on active duty, stationed in MO. Nice guy. Semper Fi. Carl L.
