Under the "maximum" rule, golf bags, skis, and other commonly transported sporting equipment doesn't qualify either, so they usually ignore the maximum dimensions and accept the item if it is typical for the type of item it is and is not overweight.

Perhaps if you tried to check a "triple" or "quadruple" gun case that had extra padding, thick walls, etc., they might balk or charge for an oversized item.

But it wouldn't hurt to call ahead (and get the name of the person who provides the information.)

Has anyone used SW for travel when carrying a gun case?

Their travel info shows a maximum checked luggage size of 62" L + W + H. My double gun case is 73"

Just wondered if anyone got a hassle flying with them.

You should give them a call to make sure, but I bet it's OK. After all, they are a good Texas company.

No trouble taking 5 rifles in a Tuff Pak on Southwest!

But the agent you see at the counter may not be as friendly...
