One of my close hunting buddies in a very small circle, finished his war with cancer this morning. His diagnoses was three years. Last year his decline was the severe ending with today. He tried to hunt this year, but just could not. I got to field dress, drag, and butcher his last deer with he and his daughter looking on. A nice 3 year old 9 point. His daughter killed her first deer a 2 year old 8 point two seasons ago with him in the stand with her. A horrible part, to the extent he could understand, he was told he was going to be a Grandfather yesterday. I hate when folks say person lost their battle with cancer. Scott did not loose anything. Cancer wrangled with him, until God said, "Enough." Cancer has lost. What it took from Scott is dust before the desert to what Scott has stepped into. Scott, in our Loss, received the fulfillment of his faith. Scott won. We are diminished in the lack of his presence. However, even diminished those who got to know him, call him friend or kin were and remain quicken by knowing him. Scott was very immersed in Germanic Hunting. We enjoyed many night on hunting in Germany, Austria, I Bulgaria and he Romania. He travelled to Germany weeks at a time every year until he became ill. Scott gave me a 1970s bottle of bourbon. It is unopened of course. Unless I change my mind, I am going to drink it over the next two weeks. Scott, I know this is sentiment. That your perfection removes you from hearing my words, but for me, thank you, God Speed, and Fare you well.

Raise a glass to your fine friend, and remember well of him. Sorry to hear your friend has gone but thats what we deal with as age comes to us. Some we love are taken from our orb. But only until we meet again in the Happy Hunting grounds. Hunting.... it's not everything, it's the only thing.

I have been in your place several times and it does not get any easier. The best you can do is to keep his memory alive and keep moving forward.

We had the funeral today. I have to say, it was unlike any funeral I have ever seen/been a part of. First, while their was a pastor/preacher the service was very minimal, respectful, and not what I am accustomed which is more of a presentation of Jesus for salvation type of service laid over a funeral. This was the inverse. Second, his wife and daughter were hurting. However, in this moment I shared with them they were not conquered by their grief. Third, the service being more divorced from evangelical service was the most laughter I have seen in a long time. Scott was purposely unique. Speakers were invited to share memories of Scott. You would have thought it was his birthday and we were roasting him. This brought great joy. The casket was made from oak. It struck as being nice. I was speaking when I realized just how many people know one another, have close interaction among one another that would not know each other but for Scott.

Condolences on the loss of your friend. I lost my lifelong hunting/fishing buddy to cancer last year about this time. We made our last hunt together just three months before he passed. It does leave a void! 2 Chronicles 7:14: If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
