Question?? So you go for the package rifle... I have one also. I'm struggling with what to replace the scope with? I bought the package because at the time it fit what I was willing/able to pay. Now that I'm looking to put some new glass on top,I'm having a hard time justifying what I might end up spending. There goes my "bargin" rifle. What have you guys upgraded to?

If you want a great scope that will not break, or break you budget, look for a used Leupold 4x. You can often find them for around $125.00 on the auction sites.

A couple of years ago I bought a 260 Rem. package rifle from Savage. With 140 gr. factory loads from Remington it would shoot 3/4" groups. The 3x9x32 Simmons scope was alright but I prefer a scope with a 40 mm lens. My only complaint was the safety was way to stiff. After clicking it on and off a couple thousand times and lubing it, it was still to stiff. With a pair of gloves on my thumb would slide inside the glove and the safety would not go off. I've seen other Savage rifles where the safetys were very good. The person I traded the gun to has not bitched about the safety and I see him daily. His thumb must be stronger than mine.

I just upgraded my 30/06. Took off a Tasco pronghorn 3x9x40 and put on a nikon prostaff 3x9x40. the Nikon is a very good scope for $150. I got mine on ebay for less.

Hey guys, I should have asked this before. How are the triggers on these rifles. I understand the accutrigger is not available on the package guns, so what is the existing trigger like??

Thanks!

They are not fully adjustable but do have some adjustments which should be given attention. Also the sides of the trigger make a lot of contact with the metal trigger housing and on mine both of them were quite rough which made for a horrible pull with a lot of creep. I simply cleaned that part up and polished the pin, adjusted the overtravel and it made a world of difference. It was still just a bit on the heavy side for my likes, but not bad at all. That's just my 2 cents..

I had one of those package jobs. Its a good strong action on an excellent barrel. I replaced the plastic magazine plate with a metal one which seemed to fix a small feeding problem and I polished up the trigger which helped it tremendously. I wouldnt mind having another one and putting a good piece of wood on it.

My latest scope purchase was a Bushnell legend, I got a new demo model on Ebay for $100.00 with warranty intact. Its basically an Elite without the rainguard, fantastic scope for the $.

Funny story: A guy i used to go to tech school with told me of a hunting story. He had a Savage rifle, an older 30-06 that he decided to lighten up the trigger on his own. after making the adjustment the safety did not function properly. If the trigger was pulled while the safety was on it worked fine. But when the safety was taken off the firing pin would drop. I guess he was ok with the way this was setup. in the fall him and his dad were hunting. They were driving down a logging trail (dad driving) and rounded a corner and came upon a game warden that had a vehicle stopped. This guy had his gun loaded and in washington it is ilegal to have a loaded firearm inside a vehicle. Well he went to unload his rifle. Safety was on, he turned the safety off to unload the gun and the gun went off. through the floor and blew a hole through the right front tire, rim and all. right in front of the warden. The cab was filled with dust from the blast. He said he had never seen anyone so pissed in his life. i cant remember how much he said the ticket was but i bet there was no chance of getting that one reduced. That is about all i know about a Savage. Nothing against the rifle. i am sure it was a good rifle before he decided "adjust" it. So, if anyone out there is looking for someone who can work a little magic on a Savage trigger I may be able to hook you up.
