My brother and I decided to go to KY this morning since he's not had any luck deer hunting this season so far. We went to a spot where deer traffic has been heavy over the years. He grunted this buck up to 25 yards and took the shot.

270 Win, 110 Barnes TSX.

This was a good buck to take from the herd as his body size and antler size are mismatched. This is an excellent meat buck, he is definitely well over 200 dressed. My brother is happy with him and that's what counts.

Thank God for the landowner and his tractor, this would have been a 6 hour affair getting this buck out of the creek bottom. Dragging him 10 yards uphill was a breathtaker.

I forgot my sunglasses were on, sorry.

Doc, great adventure and great pictures as usual too! Is that the entry wound in the pics? If it is, it's bigger than any entry from a XXX I've ever seen or had. I'm curious as to what the terminal performance specifics are in your opinion--what your estimate of impact velocity did the pill exit & so-forth.

Thanks and Congrats to your brother!

Yes, I asked my brother about that too. He said that it is "at" the entrance hole....meaning, he saw this buck at 25 yards and said it had a big hole in it already right behind the shoulder and for the few seconds he had to look at it, it looked like a gash from another buck. It is hard to tell but a lot of the hair is missing there. He said that it looked like a good place to aim as he didn't have a great view of the shoulder thanks to a fallen tree's branches. So he aimed at the previously damaged area.

Terminal performance is second to none. I do not know the exact speed for this load in his rifle, and yes, the bullet exited right out the other side just behind the opposing shoulder. This buck did run down the hill a bit but blood was plentiful.

I was surprised at the entrance hole and began to ask him questions immediately but that is when he said something had already made a hole there previously. I wish we had taken a few pics of it because you could see some scar tissue and bare skin there.

If you look close there is a second small puncture wound just on top and to the left of the bigger hole. This buck had been fighting we are assuming.

Hey Hollywood Cool, Congratulations to your brother from me.

Those close-in shots have the potential to be more difficult than a lot of the long distance ones.

Continued good hunting and clean 1-shots kills to both of you.

Hey Doc, thanks for the intel on the shot. I've been out in Texas and Kansas for a few days. (10) wish I could do that more often. I actually had the TSX pencil through on a buck during this hunt, pin hole going in and SLIGHTLY larger going out, deer ran about 80 yards before I whacked him in the shoulder with round #2, which anchored him. He was a big boy, around 245 pounds live weight, but I was amazed he ran after that first TSX in the boiler room at about 150 yards!

I can see the pre-exisitng damage on that buck of your brother's, I would guess you're right, he probably had been fighting.

One of my best buds took a non-typical on our Knasas hunt that green scored 224 3/8, a real pig! I'll try and shoot you a pic later.

Take care--Don

I once loaded a 100 grain Barnes XFB in a 270 WCF for a young lady. My 14 year old niece in fact.
We loaded for a velocity of about 2800 fps to prevent her from the effects of excessive recoil.
She shot a very nice blacktail buck at about 30 yards One shot through the shoulder dropped the buck in its tracks. I was amazed at the size of the entrance wound. It was hardball sized!!! The bullet progressed on through to leave a pencil sized exit wound. Thought that so strange.
