A friend told me of S$B scopes made not in Germany but in an est europe country. Can someone tell me something? How they compare with the made in Germany? Thanks.

The scopes are assembled in Germany. They may contain components from the S&B-owned subsidiary in Hungary. George ------------------

ABC, As you live in Europe, consider Zeiss or Swarowski (madi in Germany/Austria). A little bit more expensive than S&B but with a better quality. ------------------

ABC, all I can tell you is that the two S&B scopes I have the good fortune to work with were outstanding pieces of equipment. I have helped two different people work up loads for their rifles that owned these scopes and I can tell you they are first rate. Both were very bright, showed excellant contrast, had very good responses to sight adjustments, etc. I personally own a hole bunch of Leupold Vari-X III scopes. The S&B are better optical quality in my opinion. R F

quote: @Frank, @ABC, Yes I think, S&B is one of the best scopes you can buy on the civil market. S&B headquarter and development is in Germany, but the scopes are built in Hungary by a company, which was in the past (before Perestoika) owned by the hungarian government. That company built in that time only military optics of the best reputation. A friend of mine, which is retired now and highly graduated with an Dr. in Optics has visited that plant, because his company tried also to buy this plant after opening the borders and he sais, that he has never seen such good craftsmen and machinery for optomechanical equipment in Europe before. The plant in Hungary belongs now 100% to S&B, because they have bought it. So buy S&B and dont look back. ------------------

Yes, probably they are assembled and tested in Germany, but all the parts are definetely built in hungary. Anyway, I like S&B. For the money, you get the best European scopes. With Leupold, they are my favorite scopes. ------------------

Assembly is assembly, and whether they're pieced together in Hungary or Deutschland, the quality is not being jeopardized. These are the best scopes out there.

I am glad to hear good things about these scopes, because they have been recommended to me and i am considering them. I have been told by the sales person between $1000-$1600 ($600-$1000 USD)and was wondering if that was a good price for these scopes, and if so, what magnification you would recommend. They will be going on a 257 weatherby and a 300RUM.

Max thanks for that information.Alstro What magnification you want is a personal choice,I myself have the 4x16x50 side focus mil dot on a 280 Ackley for long range deer hunting. The scope has a numberd compensator on it. I have the compensator sighted in to my leica rangefinder. Range then turn to desired number. I have made several kill over 400 yards. I would rather have more magnification then less.

A normal hunter cant see any differens between S&B, Zeiss, Swarowski and Kahles. These four are the absolute top of scopes made today, and leaves everything else miles behind. Docter, Meopta, Pecar and Kaps are the best of the rest. If you look in a Leupold or something like that and compare it with any of those above, you will see a BIG differens in the quality. Especially the optic quality... American and japanese scopes does not have the brightness and light transmission that the European scopes does.

Thanks I know the high quality of S&b, I own a 8x56 marked made in west germany that is ultra bright. I asked about the quality of the ones made in Hungary because here they are less expensive of the one marked made in Germany. I belive now that if i buy a one stamped Made in Hungary i can have the same quality with a better price. Abc
