April 19-25.

I made arrangements to bring my 6.5yoa grandson along.

I was suppose to pick him up the day before. Looking at the weather forecast. I decided to postpone.

Well the weatherman could not of gotten it more wrong.

I roosted a tom the night before the first day.

I was in that location just before day light.

A couple of toms started gobbling on the roast just before sunrise.

I called to them. They answered back. As I was working them. I decided that I really didn't want to fill my tag when the grandson was not along.

So I stopped calling and decided to leave.

As I left I noticed two toms had come in. they just walked off as I left.

I then went scouting my wife was going to pick up the grandson the next day. We would be able to hunt together the 3rd day of season.

I noted a few likely areas with birds. My cousin told me that he had killed his bird at 645am

He said he had several toms working his field.

I made arrangements to hunt his place with the grandson.

Early the 3rd day weather decent not great. My grandson and I were set up.

At daylight light we had a slew of toms gobbling.

At about 640 I noticed 4 toms had appeared 103 yards away. I worked them with the call and one was coming towards us. The other 3 hung back.

The one coming in hung up at 52 yards. As I was trying to convince him to close to under 40. A group of hens started to arrive in the field.

A total of 16 showed up the toms all worked their way towards the hens.

We watched as the hens and toms feed. Then a group of 4 jakes showed up now we had 8 legal birds with in a couple hundred yards.

As we were playing with them 3 more toms were cobbling back in the woods within a quarter of mile.

As much as I tried I just could not get them to come my way.

During this time the weather turned for the worse. The wind picked up rain, sleet, then snow.

The grandson was a real trooper but I could tell the weather was having a effect.

So when the birds were out of sight we left and went in for breakfast.

Looking at the weather forecast I decided to put up a popup blind on that property and hunt out of that. So the grandson and I did just that.

We hunted out of that that afternoon and the next morning and afternoon. The weather was horrible 20 to 35 degrees on and of rain, sleet and snow.

At one time a inch of snow fell in half an hour.

We were warm and toasty as I had a propane heater inside. We had birds around but nothing would come close enough.

On Sunday the 3rd and last morning I had the grandson. The weather was cold 20 degrees but clear. We were in the blind before day light. We could only hunt until 9am as we had to get to home and ready for church at 10am.

With birds gobbling on the roost we stayed until 730am. Nothing came in.

I told the grandson lets go kill a bird. I am tired of playing with these birds.

So we left to go do some walking around and calling.

We drove to a spot with about 3 miles of logging roads that we could hunt. the area was a mix of big timber and clear cuts of various ages.

We parked and started walking and calling.

I have found this has worked well for me.

I will walk and call about every 100 to 200 yards. We had walked and called for about half an hour.

We then heard a gobble about 300 yards off to the east. I didn't like the position we were in so we moved about 150 yards to a intersection of 4 logging roads.

I called once and the tom answered a little bit closer from the north east.

We sat quite and about 5 minutes later I see his fan. Starting to come over the hill top 70 yards away.

He strutted and gobbled their for a bit. I clucked once and he started slowly to come down the hill looking. at about 50 yards he seem to hang up.

I reach down with my right hand and worked the leaves like a turkey feeding.

He looked up and started to move again. When he was about 35 yards away I clucked once and when he lifted his head. A WW 1-5/8 oz. of copper plated 6's did the job from my Benelli super M1-90 24 inch turkey choke did the job.

We ran to him and pinned him down until he was still.

It took about 15 minutes from the time we first heard him to killing him

He weighed 23 lbs. 8.5 inch beard 1 inch spurs. Was most likely 3 years old a average turkey for these parts.

Made it home and to church on time.

A great time with the grandson.
