Always a good idea to have a handgun with you. I went to a lease in south Texas several years ago + they recommended keeping a handgun with you at all times while you are deer hunting, as the drug runners are coming across all the time + would have no worries about killing you. I know, I know, you have a rifle, but backup never hurts. I guarantee, just knowing that will keep you awake in the blind even more than usual.

Two thoughts…

#1; WTF is he doing videoing it with his phone at that point? He’s got a lot more to focus on than getting a cool video.

#2; warning shots my ass. He simply missed that lion twice!

Very young lion. Typical greenhorn, he practiced all summer with his bow or rifle and decides to pack extra weight in a Glock he can’t shoot to save his life.

Jared lives just down the road from me. He is kind of admitting now those were not warning shots. I'm kind of suprised this happened. He has always been the kind of guy who won't hunt alone. He's been gettin alot of shit about the phone holdin, and his shootin the last few days

Most likely was seeing to much front sight causing the rounds to go high.

There is a time to take pictures and a time to shoot.

Thanks for the personnel knowledge.

I am sure this was a eye opening experience and he will change is ideas on using a handgun for self defense.

Was he hunting with a bow? If a rifle, put down the camera and shoot the thing. If that was your protection while bow hunting .... practice.
He waited much longer than I would have. After a loud yell and me retreating, aggressive advancement like that cat did would have gotten it shot.

His total focus should have been on his FRONT SIGHT, not on the framing of the video. Could have turned out very bad.

That cat meant business.

That cat would have been on him before he bounced the first time.

To his credit he didn't start spraying those 17 rounds or however many that gun holds.

Though that close there's only being scared to blame on missing, other than lack of practice.

Both of them got off lucky that time.

I watched the video several times and it appeared to me that he missed low on the first shot(the bullet appeared to kick up dust under the cat as it began a charge) and his second shot looked to have been just to the right of the cat's tail.

What are your thoughts on backing up like he did?

I know that the "experts" talk about backing up slowly, and not making eye contact, talking softly/firmly/loudly, etc. But what does backing up do, especially if the predator continues to advance?

I had to deal with a very determined grizzly two years ago. Luckily he was only determined to push us off our food using bluff charges, but even so, he almost got shot. I never took a single step backwards, and why would I have? What does backing up do, other than telling the predator "no need to fear me, I'm already backing up. You are obviously the alpha in this situation". Not to mention, giving the predator time to size you up and time you/look for an opportunity.

I could see trying to slowly back away, if the animal wasn't advancing. But if the animal is following you, why continue to retreat?

In addition to emboldening the animal, every step backwards changes the playing field: you give the animal new cover to conceal/advance from, you put yourself out of the correct foot placement/shooting posture, not to mention that you can easily trip while blindly walking backward.

I found that standing up to that grizzly was similar to standing up to a schoolyard bully: as soon as they see that you aren't going to be an easy target, and that you are actually willing to fight them, they suddenly lose interest and find something else to occupy themselves with. I'm guessing that we all know what happens when you run from a bully.

Black bear, wolves, mountain lions be aggressive.

Do not flee it just invites their prey instincts to kick in.

Grizzly/brown bears there are people here with far more experience then me to talk about them.

I would have unloaded on that cat the moment it took one step towards me. No need to tell it to get back. I would have let the gun do the talking.
