I'm relocating from the People's Republic of California to the very conservative state of South Dakota for too many reasons to count. Does anyone have experience hunting in SD, such as availability of tags, quantity and quality of animals, etc.? I know the varmint hunting is supposed to be outstanding.

South Dakota is a great hunting state with awesome bird hunting and good big game hunting. Residents have more options for tags and an easier draw. West River and Black Hills Deer tags and antelope tags are Ok to draw. Tougher draws are elk, sheep (almost impossible).

Where in South Dakota are you moving?

Too much hunting, not enough time.

You will think this is heaven compared to California.

Pm me with specific questions.

As far as I'm concerned the hunting in South Dakota offers incredible opportunities right now. We have a diverse big game species list and drawing a tag is really not the difficult. The only tags that are hard to draw as a resident are the Custer State Park licenses and the bighorn sheep and Black Hills elk tag. Prairie dogs are everywhere and most guys will let you hunt them if you ask. Deer (both whitetails and muleys), antelope, and turkey tags (usually multiple tags) can be drawn on a yearly basis. Don't forget about the pheasants and waterfowl. Huge snow geese migration two times a year is awesome. Lots of public land especially in the western part of the state. If you are a fisherman the Missouri river is a great destination.

I think you are going to be pleasantly surprised by the opportunities. It is a state with a natural hunting culture, but yes it will probably be a culture shock.

S.Dakota is beautiful half the fun is seeking and finding good hunting. The hard winters make the rest of the year worth living there.Treat others as you would like to be treated you find you will fit in.Remember to wave at all oncoming vehicles,it is the code of the west except CA where you usually get a one finger salute.
