Posted 02 July 2009 17:31 Some friends and I are trying to do a archery hunt in the flattops around Trappers Lake. One of us has a friend who hunts there and we are going off him for advice. My question is has anyone hunted there before and what advice can you give me. I have hunted Colorado before around Craig and have camped and fished in the Flattops area but have not bowhunted.

Most likely prepare to hunt shoulder to shoulder. Everyone goes to the flat tops. I have seen a slight decline in hunters in that area lately probably because of to many, but its hard to say each year is so different with elk season. I hunted 3rd rifle near their last year and didnt even see elk unless you count 10 from about 8 miles away with optics. But if you get deep into wilderness your chances do increase.

You will not see the super heavy hunting pressure in the flat tops for bow season. Yes it gets nailed in rifle season because the area is easly walked and has lots of roads. Bow season offers much better hunting up there. I hunted Trapper lake several times and always saw elk. Never killed a bull but it was still a nice area to hunt. Like all hunting in Colorado on public ground....your odds will increase the further you get away from access points. Good luck! ****************************************************************** R.
