I'm thinking about buying a new gun between a 243 and 300 win mag. Reason why is beacuse I have these two calibers and would like to get something in between.

Therefore what are your suggestions? Keep in mind I want this to be a true in between caliber regardless of how common or uncommon it may be.

.280 Rem, I love mine

270, 280, 7x57 (aka 275 Rigby). Also 25-06 on the low end and .308 on the upper end.

More exotic might be the 7x64 Brenneke, there is a nice Steyr (not mine)in this caliber in the classifieds right now. It's an excellent round and ammo is acutally available.

Another vote for the 280. It has become my favorite!

I would say .25-06 or a 7MM-08 Rem.

I would not be with out a .25-06. Love it!

Get a rifle you "REALLY" like and go with a 7mm Remington Mag. You can load it up to take anything on the North Amercan continent or load it down to cover any range of performace from the 243 upward. Great range of bullets available.

270, 7mm08, or even nice lightweight 308

A 270 win will do any thing a 7mm mag will do with less noise and recoil, and more accuracy!!!

I have a 7mm Mauser, a couple of them, and a 284 Win. Incidentally, the ballistics of the 284 Win and the 280 Rem are too close for argument. Either one is fine. And, the 7-08 is very close to the 7mm Mauser, so either one works.
The 7mm Rem Mag is over rated; much fire, smoke and recoil, with little to be gained over the 280 or the 284. And, the 7mm Mag uses much more powder to boot. Belted cases belong on DGR's, but are a PITA on North American Hunting rifles. I have 20 years of experience with the 7mm Mag too.

The 280 Remington has the advantage of a different appearance, and you won't mix them up with the 243 or 300 mag rounds. If it weren't for that consideration, I'd say get a nice 7mm Remington.

I also like the .270 however, it doesn't hold a candle to a 7mm Rem Mag. I've never seen 270 shoot anywhere near the speed or accuracy of my three 7mm Mags do.

With that said a 270 is a fine caliber for most big game animals. And is perfect if your're looking for a cartridge in between the .243 and .300.

Since you have the 300 I would suggest a 270.

Definitely the 270. It is a perfect medium between those 2 you already have.

2nd options I'd readily choose are the 7mm Rem mag or STW, or 7-08 or 308.

Never been a .270 fan, but for true "in between", it fits the bill. 6.5 is a hair on the smaller side, and 7mm just a hair on the larger side. Actually, anything in any of those three diameters would work, but .270 is the true "tweener".

If you handload, my vote goes to the 308.
I have a 243 and a 308, and a lot of powders will do for both, as the case is the same, (also using the same shell holder)
At the business end, being a 30 cal, you can use the same bullets for your 300, so you have a good range of bullet weights and speeds to choose from.
A 270 with a 150 bullet has the same kind of energy as a 308 with a 150 bullet anyway, but the 308 can happily throw anything up to 180"s accuratly.

I'm gonna take some abuse for this post, but...A 270 was the second centerfire rifle I bought early in life. I have always had at least one. Several years later I got a 7mm Wby. Mag. and then a Rem. I own both and shoot both now. I have never been really impressed with the 270. By my fault (who else to blame, and I was using it) I have wounded more animals and lost more with the 270 than anything. The 7mm Magnum is more gun though recoil is not much of a factor. It just doesn't kick that much. Bullet weights are quite numerous for either. I have a Brown Precision in 7mm Rem. Mag. that is deadly with 160 Nosler Partitions at 3100fps. It shoots well under an inch if I do my part so accuracy is not in question. I quite simply feel undergunned most of the time with a 270. Sorry its just me. OK its got a belt, who really cares. Remington and Winchester both came out with beltless short magnums and people are still complaining about them, a solution to a problem that didn't exist. People like to have something to complain about. With that said, I have very accurate 270 Remington that I have been wanting to try the 140 Nosler partitions in. I may load up a few and use it as my primary deer rifle this season. The reality of it all is that we have a wide selection of calibers that work. So, pick up a rifle that you really want in 7mm08, 270, 280, 7mm Mag. and wear it out on game. They will all do it. Then if you decide you want to get another rifle in a different caliber, get it.

I have these 2 same calibers in Sako m75SS rifles. I had the 300WM first, then I bought a 270WSM in a Tikka T3 LS as Sako did not have the Greywolf out yet in 2004. Then I bought a used Sako m75SS 243.

So I will suggest a 270WSM with 140gr Accubonds for your caliber in between 300WM and 243 Win.

I agree with MP....not just a 270 but a 270 WSM.... 3300 FPS with a winchester 130 grain ballistic Silvertip, deadly combination.

I have boom flopped 5 whitetail deer with this load and caliber so far. And this caliber and factory ammo shoots sub MOA with a SS Win Model 70 classic, and a Sako Finnlite. It has been my favorite whiretail deer cartridge for the past 5 or 6 years.

270 WSM (Winchester Short Mag)

I own a 280, a 270, and a 270 WSM, and the 270WSM I like best. My favorite rifle is a 257 Roberts Model 7 Remington, but a lot of people don't think its enough gun.

I liked Browningguys suggestion of the 7x57/275Rigby- not an overpowered cartridge but a very useable one. Get a '98 mauser in 7x57 and restock to your liking. You already have the 300mag if the power is needed. R.

I haven't found any game animal in Colorado that can't be killed with the .270 Win. They are every bit as accurate as any rifle out there if you spend time finding the right load for your rifle. Step up to a 338 win mag and forget those little pop guns.Its flat shooting and hits like a mack truck.It kicks abouyt like 20 ga heavy dove loads.Mine are accurate as heck in the Rruger model 77 both Mark I and Mark II.Its very versitle with bullets from 160 gr to 300 gr.It will take all North American game.I had a 300 win mag .I didnt find it much better than the 30-06.i found alot of difference between the 300 win mag and the 338 win mag.If elk,moose or bears are going to be on your future hunts try one out you wont be disapointed.It has way less blood shot on meat than the 270 winchester does.I use mine on deer all the time with 90 one shot kills from 3 to 425 yards.If you like to see deert go down in their tracks get one.I have 243s whicxh I only use on coyotes any more.I gave my 300 win mag to my dad who only hunts deer.
