I have a question about Mouflon Sheep hunting. What's the appeal? They remind me of my grandfathers barnyard sheep, except with horns. I admittedly know nothing about them but it has the feel of shooting a barnyard critter to me. Corsicans Texas Dall Black Hawaiian Painted Desert Mouflon Were they domestics gone feral, or are they all naturally wild? Are they hard to hunt?

they are completely wild- not feral. just like any other species of wild sheep but from Europe/north Africa and introduced elsewhere. if Mouflon are like shooting a barnyard animal, then so is shooting Dall, Big Horn, Stone, Argali, etc., etc., etc.... SD, Like any other animal if hunted in its wild range they are a worthy trophy. Take one from reared habituated stock and it's a different story. After all you can raise Cape buffalo in captivity and most would agree they are not really the same animal, so mouflon are no different in that respect. K

I live and hunt in Texas. i have a catalina goat, and a black hawaiian on the wall. would like to add a mouflon and corsican also. I think they make a super trophy. Chances of me going to alaska after a dall are pretty slim. okie Keep yer powder dry and yer knife sharp.

I figured that it was probably me being tainted by perspective. Thanks for the replies. So is hunting them in the U.S. worthwhile or would a guy be better to find them elsewhere in their natural habitat?

It all depends on the person. If a person wants the total experience, go to Europe. If a person simply wants to take a few days off from life/work, go somewhere and relax and shoot something to hang on the wall, without being out the expense/time and physical out put, then go to one of the ranches here in Texas. Different strokes for different folks. Even the rocks don't last forever.

I hunted free ranging Mouflon on the island of Hawaii when I was stationed there. They were a lot of fun and were pretty challenging. Lots of them around Volcano's National Park and they are no where near tame in that area. Never hunted them anywhere else. It has to be noted that they are a wild sheep originally from Eastern Europe and in many places are a good game animal.

I agree with Crazyhorse. I live in Austin Texas and have seen them on a number of ranches. I think they are an attractive animal, but I wanted to hunt them in their native land. So, I went hunting in Austria last fall (I posted a hunting report in the Europe Big Game hunting forum.) It was a great hunt in large part to the total experience of a European hunt. I've hunted Dall sheep, Stone sheep, aoudad and mouflon. The Dall and Stone hunts were of a different caliber - but so was the price. I shot the aoudad in West Texas on a free range hunt. All 4 sheep hunts were different and all were very enjoyable. I have shot a number of exotics on Texas ranches, so I have nothing against that. But, in hunting for mouflon I am so glad that I did it in Europe (although Hawaii does sound like fun). It was a much more memorable hunt than anything you would ever experience in Texas.
