Next saturday, I'll fly to Sweden for my very first Moose hunt. 4 days hunting in stmark (2 h drive from Karlstad) and 1 day touring the Norma factory. Although I booked months ago, I didn't trust the bagage handling Orang Outangs and asked to borrow a rifle instead of bringing mine (today, I'm convinced I was well inspired as the WTC drama won't help travelling with a firearm). I asked, in preferential order, for a 9,3x62, .338 Win Mag or at least a .300 Win Mag (hope they don't give me a 6,5x55). Swarovski also lent me a 10x42 EL to field test and I will report on both the hunting and bino's. Our international group of 14 hunters has a license for 10 adult Moose (incl. 2 bulls > 12 tines) and an unlimited number of calves. Barring exceptional bad luck, there should be some action...

Good luck and I hope you enjoy your hunt. Sorry you cannot take your own rifle, but any hunt is better than no hunt at all.

Andre',
I'm leaving the 6th also,of course I won't get up north until the afternoon of the 7th. But I am looking forward to it as well. i decided not to bring my rifle because I must make two stops for business on he way back in Germany and England. The paperwork was insane. So I am borrowing a 9,3 X 62 for the duration. I hope bringing back a big set of antlers in not a problem.( I hope, I hope, I hope)
Good Luck to you!

Tom

Swedish moose are big, but not bulletproof

The 6,5X55 is by far the most popular round for moose here and you will probably do just fine with one. Loaded with a good bullet the old Swede handles the moose quite well.

The second most popular round for moose here is 30-06. In my mind the 30-06 is a lot better than the 6,5. Ill be just fine hunting moose with a 30-06.

Im pretty sure you will have a good time here in Sweden during your hunting trip.

Tombo.

Ill do a graveyard shift at the airport that night you arrive here in Ume, 18:00-05:00. Tell me witch flight you are on and Ill meet you at the baggage claim and we can share a fwe words before you go.

The days are getting moore "crisp" here now. Temperatures below freezing at nights and about 10 C in the daytime. Threes are staring to loose the leafs to. Great for moosehunting

I'll never forgot the moose I got a few years ago in NewFoundland Canada. We had gotten my Caribou the day before and were now hunting hard for moose. We were seeing sign all over the place and we were sticking pretty much to the creekbeds and Bog's.

Well we sat down on the side of a creek and were eating lunch. All of a sudden , out of no-where's, my guide yelled , "There's a Moose , there's a Moose". I turned and saw a dark shape moving away into the tree's.

This big young Bull Moose had walked up to 30 yrds of us, thru the thickest and noisiest forest you can imagine, and was just standing there looking at us when my guide saw him. To this day I have never understood how such a huge animal could have walked so close to us , in that heavy forest, without making a sound.

Well we worked around that treeline hopeing the moose would step out into the bog itself, and sure enough, He did. He was about 20yrds away from the tree's, and the creek, when I saw him ; He was about 150 yrds away from me at this point. Well I had no rest and had to take the shot ; I went down to a kneel, put the rifle arm on my knee to steady it, and squeezed off the first shot, a beautiful thru&thru right behine the shoulder's and thru both Lung's.

The moose hardly even twitched , he turned slowly away and started making for that chest-high creek with my guide yelling "get him again"!!!.

I was scared that he would get in that deep creek and die there, imagine having to cut an animal, that big, out of a creek that deep. I took another shot and the 225 grn A-frame, out of the .338Win Browing S-Stalker, broke his bag. He folded like a sack of flour, it was awsome to see a big animal fold like that.

But he still wasnt dead, it took a 3rd shot to put him out of misery. He was a nice young Bull and he was stuffed with Blueberries from the Bloom the Island was going thru at the time. Without a doubt he was the best tasteing animal I ever killed, those moose steak's were just fabulous.

Man I love moose hunting ; They are just a grand animal to stalk, I even like hunting them more then Elk. I think a lot of hunter's dont give them the credit they deserve. I think they are just a great animal, and boy they sure eat well.

Im trying real hard not to be envious of you Andre, have a great hunt.........10
