The rancher has agreed to do one more blackbuck hunt this year. I know this is short notice, but if you have been wanting a trophy blackbuck, this is your chance. The hunt is Saturday, April 3rd. I can take 2 hunters. This will be the last blackbuck hunt this year! We will hunt from sunup to sundown. The cost is only a $100 daily rate and a $700 trophy fee when you take your buck. You should get a shot at animals from 17" to 20"+. The ranch is near Camp Wood, Texas. These are free-ranging blackbucks on a working ranch and are not behind high-fence. They are very wary and don't stand still for long. It is a challenging hunt. Be prepared to take up to a 300 yard shot. I can usually get you within 150-200 yards. Let me know ASAP, Bob bobcat50@satx.rr.com This is the blackbuck I took here:

We had a good hunt! I left San Antonio Saturday morning at 3:45 AM and met my hunter at 6:30 AM in Camp Wood, TX. We met the rancher, discussed the hunt strategy for a bit, loaded up the truck, and headed for the ranch to start hunting at sunup. The ranch is a 2,350 acre working sheep and cattle ranch, all with low-fence. The blackbucks are free-ranging and come and go on the ranch. They are extremely wary and difficult to get close to. At about 8:30 AM, we found a 19"-20" buck. My hunter and I stalked to within about 200 yards of him. Unfortunately, the shot went just a hair high. We hunted hard and got on 3 other good bucks, but they just wouldn't stay still long enough to get a shot off. In one instance, my hunter would have had to shoot over the back of a sheep and wisely elected not the "thread" the needle. We took a break at 11:30 AM and joined his wife for lunch in town. We then headed back out to the ranch. About 2:30 PM, we spotted 3 bucks, two together and one by himself within 100 yards of the truck. Catching one out in the open this close has never happened before on one of these hunts! Mu hunter just raised his rifle and elected to take this one, all in a matter of seconds. He made a perfect shot with his .280 and dropped him in his tracks! This buck was right at 17". He would be a tad under 19" for official ROE measuring following the horn curl. We went back to the rancher's and used my game crank to cape and quarter his buck. After that, my hunter and I headed over to the other 1,750 acre ranch near Barksdale to try some calling. As we crossed the Nueces river to the ranch, my left front tire blew. We managed to get across the river and change the tire. We made a few stands before dark, but didn't whistle up anything. There aren't any coyotes in this area, but we were hoping we might find a fox or bobcat. I headed back to San Antonio about 8:30 PM. Bob Here is the blackbuck he ended up taking:

I'd love to Bob, I'll even be in the neighborhood that weekend. However, that $800 will pay for my kudu in Namibia. Maybe next year. Good luck.

Hey DR, I understand about your Africa trip! Still.......still a $100 daily rate and $700 trophy fee beats the heck out of the $1200-$1500 the high-fenced rances are getting + a $200-$350 daily rate. We'll get you over here yet!! Good Hunting, Bob

Hey Maddog, It is only about 2 hours or less to Camp Wood from Bandera. I am sorry about the dates. They only do a few of these a year and I can't control that. It is a hoot though! Bob

Usually these hunts are in late January and early February. I won't know until late this year about the dates. That is one of the things we deal with hunting on working ranches instead of high fenced game ranches...... Bob

Bob, I just returned from your neck of the woods and expected to be regaled with tales of hunter heroism. I sure saw some nice blackbuck from the road (FM337). Although I had to pass up your blackbuck, I managed to take a nice fat pig and and a tasty axis doe. Maybe next weekend it won't rain...

Well, we had a great hunt on the 10th. I took a hunter from here in San Antonio up this time. We had just enough break in the rain Saturday for a good hunt. We started right at first light. We got on 5 bucks, 4 presented shot opportunities. The 5th one was a solitary buck moving through the tree line. My hunter was able to make a nice shot and take him at 225 yards. The buck measured 18 1/2", which is good for a free-ranging buck on this ranch. Since it was still early, we kept hunting and got him on a doe for the freezer. He took her with another nice shot at 172 yards. I can't wait for January to start over again! Bob This is my hunter with his buck:
