Moving to the area. Anyone have any good comments about the hunting around the area. Planning on doing mostly over the counter for the upcoming, ie. Archery deer, bear, coyotes, etc.

PM me; I deer hunt south of there. Deer tag is easy to draw but not easy to kill 'em.

I would be interested in coyote hunting with you up that way; helps to have two guys.

If you're going to be moving to the outskirts of town you'll likely have elk in your yard at times. My favorite elk unit due to its relative proximity to Phoenix is just 30-40 minutes towards Heber from there.

You've made a good choice in my opinion in Payson. It's not quite up into the rim country so the winter weather won't be quite so harsh. Yet it's right at the beginning of the elevation for the high country pines so summer weather while warm at times will be nice.

If you and AZWriter could stand a third, I know of a place about an hour from Payson I've always wanted to coyote hunt. It's packed full of them and they have a propensity for running right at you.

Don't mean to ramble, but I remember Payson from the early '60's and it was just a real small place. When I went back in 2001 I have never seen a place change so much. It had grown up in every way. I still love the Rim country and think about it often. Hunted my first deer above Kohl's Ranch in 1962. Loved the area around Wood's Canyon Lake, brings back a lot of memories to me. Smiler

Great area.

It is not enough to fight for natural land and the west; it is even more important to enjoy it...So get out there and hunt and fish and mess around with your friends...

Check your flow rate on your well and time of year if your not on city water before you buy. Payson did put in a super deep city water well in a year or so ago due to locals running out of water around the end of summer. Strawberry still has this problem and has no city water assets to tap into.
Sorry not much to add on hunting other than Alpine has some huge Bull Elk.
