I was thinking of getting the Ultralightweight in 338-06. Was wondering if anyone had shot or owned one? Comments are welcome.

Thanks

I had a 338-06 made up for me on a Win 70 action and I love it shoots great 3/4" 3 shot groups at 100 yds with a couple of loads I have shot so far. I haven't taken game with it yet but I don't think anything in N. America is out of the question. I can't comment on the Weatherby but they usally are accurate enough for hunting.

Rob,

What loads have you been using? Have you chronographed any of them?

Thanks,

Bill

Bill, I have been using 55gr RL15,CCI200,180 Nosler BT and the Barnes 185 XLC. 54 gr RL 15,Nos 200 BT. I have worked up to 58gr IMR 4320 with the Nos 200 seems hot in my rifle.I have compiled alot of data from alot of sources on a spread sheet I can send it to you if you have MS Excel.I will Chrono these this month.
I was just seeing if the ER Shaw barrel would shoot and does it ever.Check out the loading on this page.

Start with 60 grs of VV-N550 and the 210 gr Partition and work up. My 22" barrel safely gets 2820 fps and it has been very effective on bull elk as well as the hearty nilgai here in Texas. Averages 3 shots well inside an inch when I do my part. That bullet is ideal in the .338-06 IMO and appears to behave a lot 'bigger' than it is. Mine is a lightweight (7# w/ Leupold 2.5-8X and sling) 700 Remington rebore and is pleasant to shoot and a dream to carry.

The Weatherby .338-06 is a beautiful looking rifle, and like other Weatherby rifles it is expensive. However, I believe it weights a little over 6 pounds, has a fluted barrel, and a synthetic stock. It comes with 20 cases (for those who may want to reload), but Weatherby also sells ammo for it.

I have heard that one can order a .338-06 from the Winchester Custom Shop. One can also send a .30-06 to Pac-Nor, E.R. Shaw and others, and they can fit/install one of their .338-06 stainless barrels for under $300.00.

Bill,
I have a M70 with a Lilja barrel in 338-06 and it has worked well on deer sized up to eland sized game using the 250 grain bullets. Great cartridge. I am amazed that it took this long for it to be recognized.
Also have a Wby Ultra Lt Wt, BUT in .280 Rem. With a sling, three rounds, and a 2.5-8 Leupold in steel mounts, it weighs right at 7 pounds. A dream to carry, yet heavy enough to swing well. Recoil is stiffer than my 9 pound .280, but not by much. I see them for $999 all over the place at MT gun shows. I think for the quality, good trigger, and good accuracy well worth a grand. I have NEVER been a big WBY fan but this rifle has made me start to think.
IMHO this rifle , but in .338-06, with 210 partitions and either a light variable or a 4X would be a hell of a light weight elk rig.

Frank,

Glad you have taken a liking to your Weatherby. I would always rather pay a bit more for a good factory rifle; rather than paying for a rough factory rifle that needs to be tuned up to shoot right. That is why I appreciate the various Sakos and Weatherbys.
