What bullet? distance? load? results?

For me it's a California ground squirrel with 500gr. bullets at 80 yards. The results really couldn't be determined....... not enough evidence recovered.

(Just yank'n Mike_D's chain) jumping

Take care,
Kyler

Legistine actu? Quid scripsi?

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

I am your friend, I'm just mess'n with ya.

I also remember that ground squirrel shoot where the 9.3 and .375's were the LITTLE guns. That was pretty fun. (Not recommended for the serious meat hunters though.)

You beat me Kyler. I've taken ground squirrels with my 375 H&H and a 300 grain Barnes TSX.

Don't know the results, all I found was a hole in the ground and a red smear.

Fruit flies, though I'm not sure that hunting them over bait was entirely legal at the time.

Load? factory 500grain soft points, them fruit flies are dangerous when wounded!

The hornet my brother killed the same day with a 338winchester was a near thing, but that was ruled justified as self-defense.

I certainly can't top gophers and fruit flies with a .460 Weatherby. I did shoot a couple critters in Tanzania with a .500 A-Squared (a 460 necked up to .50 caliber). It was a (too-light) Harris Talon with Barnes bullets. Besides a 'Buff', I shot an impala, a Grants Gazelle, and a Thompson Gazelle. The latter is about the size of a fawn antelope. I shot it from the prone position which proved to be not too smart. I was very anchored and the substantial recoil of the too-light rifle got me good; scope cut over the eyebrow, trigger finger barked by the inside/front of the triggerguard, middle finger barked by the outside/rear of the trigger guard.

The 35 pound 'Tommie" was about 125 yards away and took the Barnes bullet through both shoulders and crumpled in his iddy-biddy tracks. There was a 1/2" hole through and through. I probably shed more blood than he did. Maybe 1/10th of that cartridges energy was impacted onto the little guy and 1/2 of the rearward energy was absorbed by me. A .222 would have been 'nuff gun.

The biggest thing I've ever shot a squirrel with was a 7mm mag loaded up with those 110gr Speer HP's....

I don't know how high it went because it never came down... atleast not in one pieceSmiler

I don't have a .460 in my cabinet, but I can tell you a .375 H&H loaded with .300 grain A-Frames will cut a cat smooth in half at 30 yards.

OOOOOHHH Squirels love to play with the 44 mag..... I just picked up a 454 and wonder how Mr Squirrel T Rodent would like to play with the 300 gr JFPs......

And yes, Ca has some viscious squirrels, the attacked people in Mountain View and they had to bring in a professional exterminator (sorry, they used bait and traps, they declined my offer of professional 50 gr 223 squirrel control, evidntly not everyone likes to see red mist)

I STOPPED a red squirrel charge at 12 feet with a 45-70 using a 500gr hardcast ...
does that count?

One of my proudest moments in shooting was this year in my garden. I took out a groundhog with a .416 Rigby loaded with a 370 grain North Fork at 2600 fps. I was damn mad at the hog for taking out my first two rows of green beans and cucumbers. My garden happens to be adjacent to my shooting range, that was the hogs downfall. BOOM Good shooting.

Yeah, but at least he shot through an elephant, a rhino, and a cape buffalo first before that 500 gr slug ploughed through the squirrel and lodged itself 24" into a giant Seqouia tree...

John

Not making light of the awesome 45-70, somebody must have spiked my gatoraide.
