I am going elk hunting in Wyoming in September and practicing prone and seated shots at 200 to 300 yards. Anyone know where I can get life size paper elk targets? Interested, of course, in the vitals, so I can simulate shots on a real elk. Thanks.

I don't know if anyone sells life-size targets, but I'll tell you what I have done. Find a picture of an elk in the position that you want, scan it or take a picture of it if you don't have it in a digital format already, then use a digital projector to project it onto a wall. Set it up so that the image is life size (lots of information on the net of average elk dimensions - height at shoulder, etc), and trace it onto a large piece of cardboard, or 1/4" plywood. Cut it out.

Works awesome.

Having hunted elk in CO & AZ. I only saw running elk in CO you better practice standing & shooting offhand at distances beyond 300 yds an acquaintence shot a running elk with a 270 at an estimated 450 yds & that day you couldn't sit down or shoot prone cause there was over 24 inches of snow on the ground other friends of mine have shot running elk from a standing position with a 6mm.In AZ 76 ran across a road we were on & I got a standing shot ,my first all of the other elk I saw were moving, the brush & grass were such neither sitting or prone would work.

Be easy enough to make a plywood elk, draw it out freehand and cut it with a saber saw. Doesn't matter if it looks goofy.

Done that for deer and coyote targets.

I have gray fox and bobcat sized steel silhouettes on racks so they swing, great practice for varmint calling.

I bought some paper target a Sportsman's Whrhouse last fall. They are 36" wide and 28" tall show the front half of a Bull. They come in a six pack.Champion traps and Targets makes them full color and shows the vitals. They are called Elk X-ray target. Try this site for them www.championtarget.com. I shot my Colorado bull standing at 340 yds. However, I was on private land so it depends on where you hunt on the shot, standing or running. Good Luck

An Archery Shop should have a Life Size Target for you.

Good Hunting and clean 1-shot Kills.

Thanks to all of you for the tips. I will make sure I get lots of practice in--but, honestly, I could not ethically take a 300 yard shot at a running elk in any position--just not that good.
