Im sure there are different opinions about the best place to hunt Moose in the lower 48. Its kind of a moot point though. You would be a whole lot better off buying lottery tickets than trying to draw a moose tag.

I have walked in the foot prints of the elephant, listened to lion roar and met the buffalo on his turf. I shall never be the same.

Bryan,

Maine I beleive has the most moose in the Lower 48 and also some good trophies. As Thunder Head said though unless you can buy a "Commissioner's" tag or something of that nature your chances of drawing a tag for moose are very slim.

B.C. would be my first choice for a reasonablely priced moose offering 99% shooting opportunity and about a 10% chance on a black bear. Contact me anytime if you'd like details.

If you don't have to have a 50" or better moose, just go to Newfoundland.

Mark has it spot on. In BC, you can buy a moose tag from an outfitter strait up. Plus, BC hunts are on par or less expensive than American outfitters, but with the plus of bigger moose.

Good luck!

Utah is the best place to combo them in the lower 48 as you can purchase the moose tag from the ranch owner (CWMU) and a black bear tag in a conservation auction. All other Western states will take the luck of the draw or long years waiting to accumulate points to hunt one or both. Expect to pay $8-11,000 for the moose hunt (guided with tag) and $3-5,000 for the bear tag.

If it were me, and I wanted to stay in the lower 48, I'd buy the Utah moose hunt and enjoy it. Then I'd hunt black bear on a separate hunt.

The answer to your specific question about hunting moose and bears, moose tag issues aside, is Maine. World Class Trophy bull hunting, and tons of bears. Furthermore, almost every year I talk with non-residents that have drawn moose tags on their first attempt. Others can agree with Cat Power, I realize that.. Bear tags are OTC.
