I am just wondering what we are hunting with this year? I am going nostalgic this year and using a gorgeous Savage 99 (circa 1960)in 300 Savage, (eat your heart out Ray!!) an equally fitting Weaver Marksman 4X scope, handloaded 150 gr. Nosler Solid Base BT in front of a moderate charge of IMR-3031. It's ballistics arent flashy and I cant hold dead-on at 400 yards, but for where I hunt it is all I need.

How about you, what are you using this season?
Eterry

Good luck and good shooting.

My tried and true Kimber 84M 7-08 two position saftey with 140 grn Sierra Game Kings will be my goto for the sixth year in a row while all the others sit in the vault another year. I have a stainless/laminate Ruger 77 in .270 win that gets to go when it's raining, sleating,or snowing.

Kimber Model 84 in 308 win using a barnes 180 grn TSX 44.6 grns of AA2520 gets an even 2650.

Sited about 1/2 high at 200 I can hold dead on out to about 240 with a 5" window.

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

eterry,
10/4 on nostalgia. I picked this rig up earlier this year and have not taken the opportunity to bloody it. It is a manlicher stocked mauser ninety eight in 35 whelen, double set trigger. It was smithed by a local guy by the name of Wayne Barnett. I believe it was done in the seventies. I plan on using it opening morning.

Will be using my Winchester Ftwt. 7-08 with 139 grain Interbonds over IMR-4895 and a new Ruger in 257 Roberts with 117 grain I-locks over H-4350.

The Winnie wears a 3x9 Zeiss Conquest while the Ruger Bob wears a 3x12 Nikon Monarch.

Will be Whitetail Deer hunting public land (camping) for the first week of our two week season with hopes of getting a forked horn, then come home and hunt my own land the second week with hopes of a nice buck.

Wouldn't trade those huntin' camp forked horns for nothing dancing

Well I’ve not decided yet. Gun season doesn’t open for another month and then we have an 11 week season. I went to the range today and sighted–in my .30-30, 35 Rem, .257 Roberts, .25-06 Rem, both .270 Wins, .308 Win, .30-06, .270 Wby Mag.
I’ll most likely make up my mind the night before I leave.
It will depend on the terrain I plan to hunt.

.30-30 and .35 Rem are for the thickets.
.308 Win and .30-06 are for the mature timber and edge areas.
.257 Roberts, .25-06 Rem, and .270 Win are for the more open country.
.270 Wby Mag is my bean field rifle.

Yes, I know I’ve got a lot of over lap.
But what is the fun in owning rifles if you don't use'em!!!

I have a new "favorite" rifle that I simply call my scabbard rifle....it's ugly matte finish and synthetic stock defies injuries.....well at least it defies my caring about it as I could care less if it's scratched or nicked or dented.....

It's a 20" .308 Winchester throwing 180 grain Accubonds at 2740 FPS from a Remington 700 Short action.

It just returned from an elk hunt in the Colorado Rockies and I never worried if I had enough rifle nor did I worry an instant over it's being scratched etc.....The sun beat it and it was rained on and snowed on and came through the five days on horseback and my shoulder just fine.

I have very little pride in the gun.....It's a very practical and functional tool....and there's something to be said for that!

For the rifle hunting out west that's already done I used my Echols Legend M70 in 300Wby. It's been the rifle of choice for me the past 7 years. From here out my hunting will be for whitetails around home, and that means no centerfires. So, my trusty Savage ML will get all the attention.

I've been hunting with my Remington 700 in .300 RUM. It's already accounted for 7 animals this year and I will hopefully have a couple more down in South Carolina next week. I love this gun.

That Manlicher is one beautiful rifle.

M70 XTR 300 Wby with 165 Fail Safe's behing about 84gr of RL-22. Just took it out to the range today to get sighted in and start working on loads. The faster she went, the tighter the groups. I had no signs of pressure, but the chrony took a dump my last 2 strings so I'm going to load up more and head out again this week. But I think 84 is going to be pretty close to what I'll be chasing elk with in 3 weeks.

I've been building a camp in every spare bit of time, so I haven't gotten around to loading as much as usual. That said, I still have a batch of 7RM/140 Berger VLD/63grn IMR4350 loaded from my 'lope hunt in Sept. for my Sendero SFII. Zeroed at 220 in early Sept and verified yesterday with 2 shots almost touching, dead center, and 2" high at 100 yards. Should be set for the little whitetails around here.

When it's time to hunt our cropland area(larger deer), I have some 150 NABs loaded for my old M110 06. I'll probably check zero with it this weekend. We still have a while 'til rut.

Good Luck

Only archery season open here so far. Used an old Parker Magnum compound bow with 125 gr 3 blade Muzzies to start filling the freezer. Ain't pretty but has always worked.

When gun season comes, for bear am going to use a .375/.416 Steyr Improved on an Commercial FN Mauser action with a 22" Douglas bbl and Timney trigger. Is mounted in a Hogue stock. A 1.8-5.5 Zeiss Conquest with Leupold QRW rings sits on custom mounts. Holds better and 1" at 100 yards with 350 gr Speer Mag-Tips.

For local deer it will likely be a 9,3x62 built on a VZ-24 Mauser with a 24" Douglas tube, 1.8-5.5 Zeiss Conquest scope with Leupold QRW rings on custom mounts, and a Timney trigger. Sits in a Fajen's synthetic stock. Also holds better than 1" at 100 yards with 286 gr Nosler Partitions at 2425 fps.

Will take a .458 AR (built on a Parker-Hale commercial Mauser with a 22" Douglas bbl, Timney trigger, FN left side safety, and a 2.5x Leupold with Leupold QRW rings on custom mounts sitting in a Fajen's synthetic stock) and a 9,3x74R Chapuis mounting a 1.5-6x S&B scope to Texas to hunt deer and piggies. Hope to take that pair to SA in May.

My elk and deer hunting will be in dense forest, replete with grizzlies. The rifle I'm having built will not be ready this season. So my other rifle, the one that's for sale, is what I'll use. Not much of a hardship. A Browning M71 High Grade in 348 Winchester with handloads. Here's the rifle.

What am I hunting with this season? My heart and my head. Really. Not meant to be a flip answer. In MA we're limited to scatterguns for almost everything. As such, I am determined to use my senses and skills. Now, if I end up wandering off to another state to hunt deer and up where rifles are OK, I'll likely go with my .30-30 if we're talking eastern seaboard. Never been blooded. If I head in a westerly direction, the plastic-stocked M70 in 7mag will get to go for the walk with me. Otherwise, it'll be any of my plain Jane pumpguns. Wink

Being a Walnut stock lover, I gotta say that Geedubya, Ted Thorn, and LRH270 have some BEAUTIFUL rifles; ones' I'd be proud to have at my house.

My first centerfire rifle was a Rem 722 in 300 Savage, bought by me in 1949. Shot my first Deer with it in 1950. That rifle is long gone, but I bought another one here on AR.
This rifle will be what I hunt with this year.
The rifle shoots too.... thumb
