Danny it might be OK to load the old 30-30 with black powder, if you want very slow, and weak loads, but the case isn't really large enough for decent black powder use. The 30-30 was never offered in a black powder version, but was the first successful smokeless powder cartridge for American game! I think the pressures would be extremely low with black powder. The 30-30 isn't a high pressure cartridge to start with even with fast burning smokeless powders.

Danny,

With a little experience under my belt with this instead a lot of armchair theory;

You can do it, start low and work up. IMR 4198 or 4227 would be a good place to start. Some of the data for cowboy loads, or Cast Bullets out of a Lyman manual would be a good place to start.

You have to decide if you are going to use this just to punch paper or hunt with. Your velocity will be in the range of 1200 fps to 1600 with most of those loads.

From the past I know you mentioned you have a Savage 24 F of some sort.
Although not verified from some hi Tech pressure equipment, the best load I have found for velocity and no pressure problems is still the W 748 powder. To seat the bullet where it clears feeding in a Lever action, 35 grains is the max amount of powder that you can use.

RL 7 is made in Sweden, but I don't know what you call it over there, if it is available to you locals. Start low with that, The burn rate is sort of near 4198 if you can't get that in Sweden.

Good luck with it, and work up so we don't freak out the armchair theory guys in here! ( My load manual says ".......!!!!" [Razz] [Roll Eyes] [Cool]

Hi seafire
I've heard that reloaders are made in Sweden but i beleive it is made for alliant and are not avaiable here. I don't dare to use low charges of fast burnig behaind jacketed 220 gr [Wink] .but i may use them fr loading with cast bullet at low velocity [Big Grin]

Seafire, I was almost certain Danny was asking about BLACK POWDER in the 30-30, but maybe you read a different post than the one I answered with my "ARMCHAIRE" answer! [Confused]

Things that make you go HUMMMMMMMMMMMMM!

MacD:

I was not refering to you as an armchair theorists, so I apologize if it came across and had you thinking it was aimed at you.

Thanks for the update, I did not catch BP meaning black powder. I mistook it for some sort of European abreviation of some sort.

Good luck out there! [Razz]
