From your experience, which do you think is a better slug gun a 20 gauge or a 12 gauge and why? Also would like to hear opinions a Foster vs Brenneke vs Sabot slugs. Thanks, ASS_CLOWN

Tar-Hunt 12 ga bolt sabot slugs, or H&R/Marlin single bbl 12ga with Lightfield slugs.for the smooth bore Brenneke are the only way to go IMO

Ass_Clown, My slug gun is a Tristar 12 ga SxS with cylinder chokes and 3.5" chambers. It has Williams rifle sights on it and will keep slugs inside 1.5" @ 50 yards. They are handloaded in 3.5" hulls. I haven't shot them thru the chrony yet---guess I'm too surprised at the accuracy in a smoothbore. The slugs are 1.25 oz from Ballistic Products. Shooting this inexpensive rig reminds me somewhat of my Searcy 470 with a bit less recoil. Haven't had a chance to hunt with it -- ummm -- haven't used it for hunting yet. I seem to always grab a rifle. Sure is a fun shooter, though!

Either will work great, it depends on the range, at which you shoot, the gun configuration[rifled barrel, choke tube, or smoothbore], and most importantly, the slug design. I have killed over 35 deer with a Rem. 870 sp, that I bought in 1990. It has a rifled choke tube, and the ammo it likes best is the old Winchester 1 oz. foster slugs. My son has killed 11 deer with his NEF TrackerII 20 ga.[it has a fully rifled barrel]. The ammo it likes best is the Win. BRI sabot slug. Forgot to say that my 870 is a 12 ga. There are some general rule of thumbs when it comes to matching ammo to shotguns: 1. Smoothbores generally like fosters/brennekes the best. 2. Rifled choke tubes may shoot ANY of them the best. 3. Fully rifled barrels generally like sabots the best. All that being said, shotguns are as finnicky as women, and no 2 guns may like the same thing. Your best bet is to try as many 5 paks of slugs thru your gun, as you can find, then go with the best accuracy. If you haven't hunted with a slug gun before, get ahold of Dave Henderson's book "Shotgunning for Deer", it gives a lot of present day info on what's out there, including comparative ballistics of all the commercially available ammo. If I were starting out new, I would look at a Rem. 870, with the cantilever scope mount, and fully rifled barrel in 20 ga. The first ammo I would try would be the win. nosler partion golds, or the Rem corelokt ultra [both are 260 gr. slugs @1900 fps.]. If the accuracy is there, sighted in at 2" high at 50 yds. will put you pretty much dead on at 150 yds. and 6 0r so inches low at 200 yds. The last thought I will leave you with, is to shoot what is most accurate in YOUR gun, not what somebody tells you is the best in theirs. Good luck! Mad Dog
