I need a very good single rifle gun case. Preferably with cutout for the gun itself and water proof if possible.
Any suggestions on which ones and where to find them?
Thank you.

Talk to John Fallon, fei@inwave.com
He and his wife build custom cases, very good ones at a surprisingly good price. They live in Beloit, Wis.

I prefer SKB. They are extremely strong and are also waterproof. Downside is they aren't cheap, and they do weigh some. They are Mil-spec.

SKB...$78 for single rifle case with great padding and replaceable, ist quality hardware. Strong and lightweight...my ex-girlfriend was a professional violinist and travelled with and carried her $40k violin in an SKB case...that was all the endorsement I needed.

I have an aluminum case, I think it is an ICC. Cabela's makes an aluminum case that is thicker than the case I have and the others that they sell. I think that would be my next case. You would be surprised at how deep of scratches and dings an airline can put in a metal case. I would also go with the double scoped rifle size if I were you, if you go to Africa or even across the country you may want to take a second rifle or shotgun.

I have the Plano aluminum and the SKB plastic gun case and have carried both to Africa. The SKB is a superior case. It appears, to me, the SKB holds up better to travel. The soft aluminum outer shell was torn up badly during a single trip where as the SKB has been on several domestic trips in addition to the African trip. The SKB case is lighter and the latches are better made and less prone to snagging.

Starlight!! Tough as nails. I've beaten mine to death bouncing around in the back of my Jeep and friend's trucks. If you have a treasured rifle to protect they are, without a doubt, the way to go. And if you live near a Sam's Club they are offering them for a tremendous deal right now. The best price I could find online when I bought mine was 189.00 for the 52" case and Sams has them for 116.00 with wheels and an additional handle at the end of the case. Hope this helps.

Here's another one:
americase

I like the 2-gun safari, it doesn't look like guns to the baggage handling gorillas [Mad]

Sorry but I own a two gun safari case from Americase. I used it on a hunt to northern Quebec with not trouble but I took it to Africa twice and both times I had one of the rifles significantly off. The first time my .30-06 was shooting 18 inches to the right and the second time my .338 Win Mag. was shooting 5 inches high. That case is now only used to transport my guns to an from hunts by vehicle.

Further my hunting partner had an Americase that last all of one safari. He didn't have a 2 gun safari but his case (as does the two gun safari case) is NOT aluminum all the way around. If you look when the case is closed the top and bottom is made of some type of composite material. The baggage gorillas managed to punch a hole through his case. Fortunately no damage to the rifles.

I replaced my Americase with a Zeigel (sp?) Engineering case which so far has been adequate against the baggage gorillas but I'm still not 100% happy and am open to alternatives.

I did see one that interested me some a few years ago at the SCI convention but have not followed up yet. It was Bear Track Cases from Wyoming. The case (I think it was a custom job and not their one of their standard cases) that got my attention was one that use fitted and padded soft cases as an integral part of the "system". Looked like it would save taking separate soft cases in the duffel bag.

Pelican (brownings are them also) are great cases. I have been using the Airguide. It is neat. The gun sits vertical and held by velco straps. The scope doesn't touch anything. The stock is held by foam. It has been my favorite lately. I don't think it;'s water proof. Fairly inexpensive too.

I have a Doskosport All-weather double scoped rifle gun case that I am very happy with. It has survived many years of travel to and from the range, and hunts. I have never handed it over to the gorillas at the airport, but it survived a car crash and I didnt have to resight in the rifle. The only complaint I have is how heavy the case is.

I have a Browning Travel Vault. It is a double rifle case, but I use the extra space to hold my binoculars and spotting scope. The case is heavy and bulky, but really tough. It has roller wheels. I use it for airline travel.

SKB makes a nice single rifle case. It is much better for non-airline use, but probably would be good for that too. This case is nice because it more shaped like a rifle to eliminate weight and bulk.

The SKB dry-tek soft cases are great too, BTW.

I don't think you would go wrong with either, but you need to decide which one fits your needs best.
