For years I heard from pro bear spray, anti firearms advocates.

Your more likely to die from lightning then a bear attack.

Here's some interesting information.

Arizona -(Ammoland.com)- In online discussions of bear attacks, it is not unusual for people to claim that a person is more likely to be killed by lightning than to be killed by a bear. That is true, in a gross sense. You are also more likely to die of a heart attack or to be murdered than to be killed by a bear when you use the entire United States population as a measure.

This comparison is disingenuous. It is easy to avoid being killed by a bear, simply by staying out of areas where there are bears. Lightning strikes occur all over the United States. Significant bear populations are limited to a fraction of the United States. The relative danger of bears and lightning depends a great deal on where you are.

I guess this makes the deer the deadliest animal in America since more folks are killed by that than any other animal. Might have to think about the best deer defense caliber to stop the nasty things. animal

What stats don't tell is the amount of risk based upon exposure.

If you take into consideration the number of lightening strikes that occur annually and the number of people exposed to those strikes, the risk is quite low.

Now take into consideration the number of bear/people encounters annually and the number of attacks, then you have a much higher level of risk.

If I remember correctly, for over the past 130 years there have been less than one person per year killed by bears in North America. This includes all species of bears, both wild and tame. Many more people have died from wasp and bee stings. Throw away those .300 mags and get a fly swatter.
