thank heavens I asked. I hate unsolicited crap in the mail. I actually had the letter stamped and ready to go out and went and tore it up before it was too late. thanks for the warnings guys. Hey Bob257, my stepfather told me tonight about that successful hunter magazine that you mentioned, he really liked it and was thinking of subscribing, and he is picky about the mags he looks at. Hey guys, I just got an invitation to join some North American Hunting Club. They are telling me that for 1 dollar a month I will get a magazine and get to field test gear that I can then keep. Anybody heard of this bunch and is it legit? Are there hidden things I don't know about? Sounds too good to be true. thanks. Red

I was a member for a few years, 3 or 4, the magazine is worth the membership dues. I cannot recall ever getting any field gear to try out though. If I did it was worth remembering. It is a far better magazine than American Hunter. Scott

dago red; i have been a member for at least 5 yrs. i have been a field tester, for a mini flashlight. have rec' several knives from membership renewals. the most important part is the book of approved guides and outfitters. it is one of the many things i check before sending a deposit. the book alone is worth the price of membership. they have good videos and books on specifiic animals that u can buy. cold zero

I joined that club once- got the usual stickers, received the OFFICAL LEATHERMAN[REPLICA] with their logo on it -I believe it was made in china [saw same for about $2-3 at flea market]- never received any new trial anythings -only got mail stating if I join for x number of dollars I can get this or that- I don't think I even got all of the magazines - did not rejoin best bet is if you receive a mail for something that looks good find it at a book/magazines outlet an obtain a single copy [shelf price is cheaper then subscription in the long run , especially if mag is no good] "better hunting thru trial and error-or if you pick up a hot horse shoe it doesn't take long to look at it"

NAHC is a good outfit. Don't bet on getting too many items to field test. I am a life member, and have rev'd sabot shotgun ammo to test, but don't know how long it will be until I get something else to test. (Maybe a Mathews bow or something great like that ) I think the yearly membership dues is $18.00. The magazine subscription is worth that much. The other selling points they use are worth something. I think that there are over 400,000 members. You can visit their website at www.huntingclub.com

I've been a member for two years and can echo what everyone else has said. Very good magazine, no items to test and a decent BBS forum.

I've been a life member for about 8 years or so now. Well put together magazine with more articles by "normal Joes" than many others out there. The leather Life Member jacket was a nice touch, though I haven't received anything to field test. Oh well, it's still a decent outfit. I'd join again.

I became a Life Member several years ago. When I first joined, they had hunting leases in several states, including my own. Those are gone. They used to have a jamboree. That is gone. They used to have some decent articles on how to locate prime hunting areas and hunt them successfully. Those are gone, in favor of articles by the hacks. I have received a few items to test, but it was mostly low-end stuff. Their 'Life Member' hunts are overpriced (perhaps to pay for free rides for NAHC honchos?). What I get continuously is a barrage of junk mail, solicitations, and (unsolicited) items mailed to me. It seems they've turned into some huge marketing mill. All things considered, I would not waste my money on a membership. George

I agree with ph and Mark. I'm don't like to have to get things I don't ask for and send them back. I weeded out a few magazines a few years back and nahc was one of them. Its a good mag though. I just dont like so much junk mail. The NRA and CCRKBA are the only orgs that I don't mind getting pummuled with mail from. I called the NRA once and asked them if all that mail was worth the expence to send it. They said ...yes. It works on me. I usually send a half dozen or so contributions a year. I know some that did'nt renew because of all the mail. I think they shot us all in the foot. Back to the subject...If you don't have to many mags already...You'll enjoy theirs....

I'm a life member too. I can concur with what's been said. Good magazine, hate the stuff they send. I only tested one thing so far and that was low end. Has anyone subscribed to "Successful Hunting"? It's published by the same people who bring you Rifle and Handloader. I'm thinking of getting that one too if it's any good. Bob257

Quote: I joined for I think 2 years at $24. Before I got the first Magazine I got an Invoice for some kind of Book. Hadn't seen a Book in the mailbox, so I trashed the Invoice. A few days pass and the first magazine arrives. Nice enough for $1, but no Southern hunts in that issue. Not a problem. A few weeks pass and I get a rather nasty Invoice. I set it on the table to cool down and a couple of days later magazine #2 arrives. Still no Book. I took the nasty Invoice and wrote on it in a LARGE BLACK Marker that I didn't have the xxxx Book, hadn't seen the xxxx Book and if it did arrive now I'd toss it in the trash since I had not "ordered" anything from them. Also mentioned if I'd known in the beginning that they were simply using the magazine as a "front" to hassle me with junk I didn't order, I'd sure not have joined in the first place. Packed that blistering message in their "Return the Invoice IMMEDIATELY Envelope" and sent it on it's way. About 10 days later they sent me a check for $22 and that was the end of that fiasco.

They are based out of Minnetonka or Wayzata MN. When I lived back there, I belonged to their club for several years ( moved to Oregon in 1995.) I really got unimpressed with them. They really did not have a lot to offer, except dreams, to the average hunter. I am speaking of the guy that 99% of all the hunting he will ever do in his lifetime is hunting locally where he lives, or maybe going to another part of his state during deer season or so. A lifetime hunt that may take them to Colorado or Montana, once in their lifetime ( as it is all they can afford). It struck me as sort of a hunting lifestyle of the rich and famous. You get the idea they may want you to test a new Leupold or Nikon $600.00 scope or something like that. Instead if they pick you to test anything, it is something like a pair of BSA binoculars that are on close out for $19.95 at the Sportsman Guide or Cheaper Than Dirt. Met the owner once living in the same town..... He is living large, but his lifestyle and mine are totally different. ( Like I don't own or need a new $70,000 custom Suburban to go hunting in, each year). I make do with $250.00 Leupold scopes on the top end, instead of living with $1500.00 Swarofskis on the bottom end or my hunting battery. I judge distances by visuallizing " how many football fields, between here and there" instead of looking thru my $2800 Leica Rangefinder. You get the picture. I am an average guy, they are not.

I made the mistake of becoming a Life Member a long time ago. I thought they were a good deal in the beginning, but they quickly developed into a pain in the ass. They continually sent me videos and other crap that I had to send back. Finally I sent them a certified letter that anything they sent me that was unsolicited I was keeping. They send me at least one more item which I did not return, but I did return another copy of the letter. They never sent me any hunting item to check out either. They could send me half what it cost to become a Life Member, and I would gladly take it to be rid of them.

I have been a life member since the beginning. I thought they were the real deal initially. Like the others above I found out it was just a big marketing ploy. Wouldnt do it again. I did the same thing with a certified letter and a follow up phone call to get them not to send me anything. The magazine is still ok at times. I wouldnt do it again if the choice was given. I will say the outfitter guide boook is somewhat usefull.

I was a charter member when they first got started up. One of the promises was that theyw ere going to find land for the members exclusive hunting privilges. Great! sez I. After two years, all the land they got was back east in their home area. Nothing out in the west where I live. After two years, I dropped out. I never got any freebies to test. I did get a charter member knife that cost me $60. Great knife. A few years ago, I rejoined and well, when the membership runs out this time, I will have a non-membership for life. If I knew then what I know now, i would not have wasted my money. Paul B.

I got a one year membership, and got soo p*ssed off at all of the mail and the books that they sent and then wanted back if i didnt pay for it, that i canceled my membership and sent them a nice nasty email. They kept sending those damn invoices! By the way, did they actually do anything for the animals, or securing hunting land or securing our rights anything like what the NRA and RMEF are doing? How long ago was it that you all received all the promotional junk? In the last 6 months, I have not received much at all, just an offer for a knife, which I placed in the trash. Maybe they recently changed their ways?
