Every day applications are coming in by the hundreds, if not thousands, for Wisconsin’s first wolf hunting season in decades.

Just last Friday, August 3, the department was already stunned by the large amount of permit applications. They had received 3,277 in the first two days.

By the morning of August 7, that number has more than doubled to 7,286 applications for hunting permits.

The department said 7,150 of the applications were from resident hunters and the other 136 from nonresidents. Interested sportsmen and womens have been able to apply for a permit since August 1.

The application period runs until August 31, 2012. To apply, there is a $10 fee. Applications may be purchased via Internet on the Online Licensing Center, at all authorized license agents, at DNR Service Centers or by calling toll-free 1-877-LICENSE (1-877-945-4236).

I held off on applying. Took longer than I thought but the first lawsuit to stop the hunt has been filed. I am sure there are more to come. I say at least two years of legal bullchit before we actually see the hunt happen.

As of 8/15/12 the state received over 10,000 apps at ten buck ea. If i understand that fee allows you to enter drawing. If you are lucky you then buy a permit for 100.00. now the DNR is only going to issue 2,010 permits. Now give me stretch room ,i can not find todays paper. They plan to permit the taking of 201. The native americans have the right to take 50% . I do not know where that 50% comes from or figures in. its like playing the lotto.I think one of the items in the suit deals with the use of dogs. Dogs will suffer and die. Wolfs will do the same. When i was a kid i saw a wolf that a guy had as a pet in the points area. This guy went into town one day with his dog. There was a guy that would sic his dog on oher dogs for the fun of it.His big mistake was to sic his dog on this wolf pet. After the wolf suffered a few rips this guy told the wolf get him and thats all it took. one on one the wolf sliced and diced the other dog. the guy that owned the wolf then punched the other guy in the face, need to say no more. search wis wolf hunt you will find alot more info.

Once again the DNR has turned this into a over regulated money grab. What is wrong with selling unlimited licenses and shutting things down when a quota is meet??? Once again the DNR has proven they don't give a shit about managing game. As for the indians fuck them. I am sure they are getting money out of this some how as well. Would not surprise me one bit if they are getting paid in some way to take the position they have taken. There have not been outright attacks on the wolf hunt yet by the antis. Only opposition has been from angles that have never been used before.

One lawsuit as been filed to stop the hunt because the use of dogs is legal. They are claiming the hunt cannot go on until regulations are in place to safeguard the dogs used for the hunt. Then the indians with their cultural bullshit. If they are so worried about their culture go back to living in the woods and living off the land, instead of sitting in front of their tv waiting for their monthly cut of the casino money to show up in the mailbox. The antis obviously have learned they have to try new tactics. I am sure we will be seeing more lawsuits.

Wolves do cover a lot of ground with a pack of hounds on their trail.

This is a huge money maker four the DNR.

I belive the I heard yesterday the tribes are taking 87 tags. Don't know why they have all come out against killing wolves.

But will they use the tags or will they light them on fire like some anti's are saying they'll do?

Yet they want to get the population down to something like 300. As I understand it a wolf population can grow by 25% every year in a good year. How do those numbers ever get down to 300 considering we probably have way more than the DNR says?

Maybe I'm wrong on the 25% but I'd swear that's what I've read before.

Your wolf ripping the dog to shreads story is why I get a kick out of the pitbull vs. wolf debate that is so popular. While the pitbull grabs the wolf and shakes doing very little damage through the wolfs' fur, the insanely long canines of the wolf make the pit look like he's been through a paper shredder.

350 is the state goal we had 880 min at the begaining of this year we now should have over 1000.

201 wolves bareley takes care of the increase let alone reduce the population.

Thats if all 201 are killed highly unlikely

Well it's interesting to see how the eastern states are dealing with this whole wolf hunt thing. Here in Idaho the tags are over the counter and the season runs August 30 to March 31st. And there is a trapping season. You can purchase up to 5 wolf tags.
I wish my eastern brethren good luck, if you in fact decide to have a season.

More speed bumps for the hunt:

Tribes oppose quota of wolves

It seems likely that most or all of the tribal quota of 85 wolves will go unfilled. Would be interesting to see if DNR can alter their quota numbers next year to "adjust" for the non-take quota.
