I did not know these birds had recovered to this extent. A friend sent an email and says he has a nesting pair in his neighborhood with chicks (The Woodlands) and my brother sent this pic from west Houston:

And soon, when you are out duck hunting there will be so many that they snatch the dead duck off the water before the dog can retrieve it. Or your wifes cat just goes missing (not really a problem Roll Eyes) Up here I look at them as a type of avian wolf!

I understand they are not particularly "endangered" further north, but bald eagles did not even exist in Tx until fairly recently, not for many years anyway. I only hope their recovery is a harbinger for the Americans they represent, whose way of life is presently on the road to extinction.

How recently? On Cedar Creek lake, Tx. there were and are at least 6 pairs that have been there since 1987.

Can you expand on the above statement. Their numbers were extremely low for many years, but Bald Eagles have been recorded in Texas at least as far back as 1885.

I think probably sometime between 1885 and 1987 there were damn few eagles in TX.

They were nesting in Texas during that time, from the Panhandle down into central Texas.

Was not meaning to start a pissing match with anyone, but there is a big difference between being rare/not numerous, and didn't exist.

Whether the number was ever zero or close to zero, fact is the birds have made an amazing recovery, much more than I realized, and the fact that they are nesting in and around very large cities is fascinating. And I'm pretty sure the numbers must be much higher now than depicted in the last year on the graph (9 years ago).

I had never seen one in my home town until about 5-6 years ago. (I live about 4-5 hours from the coast) They have slowly been repopulating Ga. from south to north over the last 20 years or so. I watched 2 different nesting pairs on a river in northern Ala. over the weekend. I even saw one snatch some sort of fish out of the river.

I have walked in the foot prints of the elephant, listened to lion roar and met the buffalo on his turf. I shall never be the same.

I see 'em on the East side of Houston quite often. Along the San Jacinto and Trinity rivers.
