Is there a place where you can date your 700 by Serial Number?

I have a gun that begins with "c", does this mean it is from the custom shop?

Try "The Remington 700" by John F. Lacy.

This book covers the years 1962 to 1987 - the first 25 yrs. Page 191 has a table of barrel and reciver markings and says the prefix letter c was assigned to a block of serial numbers beginning in 11-87. It appears c is not assigned to custom rifles. Hope this helps. Rockhammer
