Does your friend have backcountry experience with saddle horses and pack horses, or does he plan to make this excursion sort of a "work-study"?
If he has no previous experience (and I mean real experience), he'd be better off hiring a guide or investing in a drop camp. Reverse economy makes absolutely no sense, especially in this case. If he has no previous experience and insists on bucking the tiger anyway, he stands a strong chance of coming to grief........

This guy is tough as nails and has horse experience plus a lot of hunting experience and savvy.P_lus all the gear necessary. Last few years he has been hunting in Idaho, back pack in and carry everything out ! He is no wimp or rookie. I still kid him a lot about missing a Cape Buffalo at 40 yds but he didn't actually miss tracked the buff for miles and finally found a spot of blood. If you draw blood even a drop your hunt was over. I don't have his phone number here at work or I would give it. Imagine a retired IBM main frame repairman who doesn't have a computer !
