posted 05-13-2003 11:11 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I am thinking about a new rifle for mainly hunting whitetails, blackbears and hogs( maybe a moose or elk hunt i the future). I LOVE lever actions, and am looking very hard at the Browning BLR in 358win. My only real question is how much performance does the cartridge loose with the 20" barrel? My expeience has typicaly been with higher velocity rounds( like the 270). Any opinions on the BLR or the cartridge would be appreciated. Thanks

Tom Do not worry about the 20" bbl on a 358. With the right bullet the 358 will kill anything on your list, and more.

Can't comment on the caliber but I have a BLR in 300 Win Mag and it's an excellent rifle. I highly recommend them.

Tom I like your choice of 358win. I wan't one in a lever too. I think you'll get all the performance you need out of that 20" barrel unless you are looking for 270 type range. If that's the case, get a BLR in 270.

I think you would be extremly pleased with that choice. They are a wonderfull combination and history has shown them to more than hold their value, its a rifle you cant loose with and would dispatch that kind of game with a profound authority. Go for it!

Have you considered a used Winchester Model 88 in .358? It might be hard to find, but that's a gun that will definitely increase in value as the years go by. Keep your eyes on gun.broker.com and gunsamerica.com and you'll find one. While the 88 isn't a lightweight gun like the BLR, the quality of design and materials is superior to the Browning.
