Never understood killing something you don't plan on eating. That cat is indeed a beautiful animal and unless it was posing some sort of problem, I'd have just left it alone. It was more magnificent alive.

I've hunted for 30 years and I've never hunted anything I didn't plan on eating. I don't judge those that do. I just don't understand the urge.

Daks I've hunted 45 plusyears and have killed lots of stuff I never intended on eating. P dogs, yotes, fox, crows ect.

I have no problem with killing things for sport, because they need killing (varmints ect) or that I want to eat them.

As long as the population is enough to handle it.

Heck of a nice cat

You would not want to encounter that beast without a gun. Its a monster. For sure it will rank high in the record books. If anyone finds out what it scored be sure to post it.

Well the skinny on this cat is that it supposedly weighed 210 lbs, (unconfirmed) but it has a confirmed Boone & Crockett score of 15- 10/16". Cat was taken in Drayton Valley, Alberta Canada and the hunter was Tim Gazankas.

This is a huge cat body wise and an incredible trophy. If you look at the power of those fore arms and neck on that animal you know there is not a deer or an elk that walks that would be safe from his jaws.

Like I said, more power to you if you want to. But killing for a trophy just isn't my bag.

In Colorado all game meat including cats must be "provided for human consumption".
Doesn't mean you have to eat it but you have to pack it out and take care of it and take it home and give it to your neighbors and in laws and tell them its chicken! (everything tastes like chicken, right).
Well part of that was from the Colorado regulations you guess which part.

I've eaten Mountain lion meat three times. Twice, freshly cooked loin, and the third time some very good lion jerky. I like the meat. If I were to shoot a mountain lion (and I always carry a tag here in Idaho when I'm hunting other game), I'd eat the meat.

Coincientally, I thought the lion jerky was more tasty than beef jerky.

Daks: hell of a comment on a hunting post.

PDS: perfect man!

Snellstrom: I'll be damned if Ill take home p/dog's. Ran into a poster sometime back that swore he'd eaten them and wasn't bad.

Far as the cat meat, been told that and read about the fur trappers from way back used to prefer it and they had the best and most that's ever been in the Rocky Mtns, or plains either.

Far as tasting like chicken, well let's see. Rattler does, don't believe that beaver did, any of them I've tasted in fact, haha!

How'd that Texas pig taste?? Like chicken? hehe

Good thread, keep it up.

Helluva comment? Why? Lots of hunters out there, they don't all have the same opinions about stuff. I thought all hunters were welcome here on this site. I'd hate to think the welcome mat was out only for people who think a particular way. If that's so, I'm in the wrong place.

I made no judgments about people hunting for trophy. I just happen to think that some animals are too beautiful and unusual to kill. Of course, I manage every year to kill a couple of deer, three or four turkeys, maybe a dozen each of pheasants, grouse, quail, squirrel, maybe a bear, so like they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

For me, mountain lions are too special to kill. Others disagree. Opinions vary, right?

While the pose certainly adds to the impression, it appears to be quite a trophy. I'd be curious to know if it is B&C eligible based on their fair chase rule:

"Please answer the following questions only if the entry is for a cougar, jaguar, or bear:

Were dogs used in conjunction with the pursuit and harvest of this animal? Yes No

If the answer to the above question is yes, answer the following statements:

1. I was present on the hunt at the times the dogs were released to pursue this animal. True False

2. If electronic collars were attached to any of the dogs, receivers were not used to harvest this animal. True False

To the best of my knowledge the answers to the above statements are true. If the answer to either #1 or #2 above is false, please explain on a separate sheet."

Daks - you're entitled to an opinion just like anyone else - not everyone will agree with it, but it's usually best to just ignore them instead of getting dragged into another confrontation that ruins a good thread.

Hell of a cat.

The Hunt goes on forever, the season never ends.

I didn't learn this by reading about it or seeing it on TV. I learned it by doing it.

That is a beautiful cat and a superb trophy. Very similar to one killed with a bow by a friend in Idaho that was well over two hundred pounds and very high in Pope and Young. Dak I appreciate your sentiment it is different than a lot of folks, but no less legitimate. I might have said the same thing in the past before there was a cougar seemingly behind every rock in California and in the City limits of most large cities (including Oakland where I live) and before I shot my first leopard....BTW, had cougar tenderloin in Idaho a couple of years back (you have to take the meat there as well) and it was not bad tasting, better than antelope and for sure bear.

I ate mountain lion at a Detroit SCI Banquet. My wife liked it. God only knows how much mystery meat Chinese food I've eaten over the years that was actually cat of the smaller variety. It tasted okay but to be sure I've switched to shrimp only based chink chow as they can't fake a shrimp.

With Chinese food one must concentrate on how good it tastes moreso than what it is you are actually eating.

Have the mindset that anything you eat that doesn't kill you....makes you stronger.

Yes, taken 20 miles west of Drayton, outfitter was Tracks & Trails outfitters. Another similar size cat was taken this winter near Grande Cache. Seems to be lots of big cats around.
