Today was my first day out this year hunting elk. I saw a total of 17 elk,,, ALL of them had ANTLERS! Not a slick head to be found. First bunch was about 100 yards away. I just watched as this group of five had 2, 6-points, a 5-point and a couple of raghorns. Next was 4 branch antlered bulls spotted them about a mile away but couldn't count tines. Next was a single 6-point bull all by himself. But the thing that took the cake was 7, yes count'em, SEVEN spikes all in a bunch! Looked like an elk kindergarden! Not too bad for the first day IF I'D HAD A BULL TAG!!!

Wow, I wish I had your problem. I assume your talking about Wyoming. My Montana tags are elk and deer either sex and upon talking to my hunting partner, they haven't been seeing too many elk. Hopefully that will change in a week. Good luck to you, I'm sure if you can find that many bulls, you can find a cow. (or you can shoot the first cow with antlers.) Sevens

I can relate.....Big time. Took a 15 year old out Sat/Sun on his first elk hunting foray , a young man I'm involved with as a "Big Brother". We practiced during the summer and fall with his newly acquired Rem 700 in 7mm mag. I loaded him some .280'ish loads with 160 NP's. Recoil is tolerable and he was shooting very well. We also have a cow tag of sorts as we are restricted to cows only by the property owner in an either sex area. SO of course all we see within a shootable distance are nothing but bulls. Same story. Still nice to see the elk but he surely would have liked to pull that trigger. My young friend did find a nice 6 pt elk shed so that at least took a little of the dissapointment out of the day. Quote: AAwwww, where's my violin? I wish I had that problem. Did a group of cows move through earlier perhaps? At least you're seeing elk!

Howdy Elkslayer, Good to see you and sorry you had no joy on the cows. I however, happened to run into one of those 6x6's that you had to let go. My niece was with us and we were trying to get her on one first. As we were heading up the hill, 5 big, mature bulls ran up the two track ahead of us. We got out of the truck, but she couldn't get on them fast enough. We three hiked around the mid portion of the hill and after awhile we split up. Big mistake. I ran into several bulls and back tracked to try and find my niece. After cow calling and whistling for a while without locating them, I went back and snuck up on those bulls. I passed up the bigger bulls and shot what I thought was an average 6x6. He went down to two 200 gr. Ballistic tips from my .338 sendero. He was about two hundred yards away. He also grew as I got closer. Biggest bull I've ever shot. Less than two hours from my front door. Feels weird. If I can get a pic on Hunt101 I'll post it later. He will be home from the taxidermist around mid summer. Gary

Man, everyone loaded up so fast at the house that I didn't see where everyone went. Here is a pick, I don't think it does him justice though.
