Use to subscribe to The Hunting Report, haven’t used their information in a long time. Been looking at NR hunts in NM,CO,UT with landowner tags,CO Ranching for Wildlife, UT CWMU’s. A couple people in the hunting industry suggested I buy a premium membership and contact the Huntin Fool. Anyone have any opinions, information, either positive or negative who have used the Huntin Fool for these types of licenses/land owner tags or services to book private land hunts or purchase landowner tags? I know the Huntin Fool’s main service is to help hunters with research in acquiring preference points and tags for highly sought after draw areas, that service is not my objective.

I feel you would have as good or better luck and 'a lot cheaper jut by contacting the DoW for each state asking for recommendations. They KNOW where game is causing problems, and are over populated and who has the type tags you are looking for. In CO it's: CPW good luck, George "Gun Control is NOT about Guns' "It's about Control!!" Join the NRA today!" LM: NRA, DAV, George L. Dwight

4WD: I cannot answer your question but I will say that I used huntin fool for their application service. I quit them when they sold out. The previous owners now have Epic Outdoors. I subscribe to this and there is some good information. They are Utah residents and could likely help you out with landowner tags. The service is $100 a year and they have a great magazine and have many tags for sale.

I have been a member of Huntin Fool for over 15 years and very much contemplate renewing every November. In the beginning, I started using them to know when and how to buy preference points for each state I eventually wanted to hunt. They are also supposed to be for the DIY hunter. Ha! They eat off both sides of the plate Hunter/Outfitter. They have around 10,000 members, so keep that in mind if you a talking to a Hunt Advisor. The magazine is of benefit because it provides the dates and draw/unit info and reg changes in condensed form. As far as landowner tags, it's a big money game/racket. I have no problem paying a landowner directly for damage Elk,Deer, etc do to their property that is game and fish intent. That is not what happens, example: Huntin Fool years ago got the list of landowners for Colorado that get tags every year because Garth Carter was in and was a game and fish guy in Utah. If you called up CPW and wanted that list you couldn't get it. They in turn would get the tags and mark them up substantially to you. CPW finally put an end to that but the work around is the "Facilitation Fee". Anytime you see a landowner tag for sale on their website and you contact Huntin Fool you can bet there is a premium involved. The landowner tag game is big business, not as much for landowners but the middle man. It is a long story what goes on. They drive prices up well beyond where they should be and you are on the receiving end. In the name of a service should you pay 30,40,50 percent or more? I have seen the landowner tag for the area I hunt double in the last two years and inflation isn't driving all of it. Like I said the magazine has some value but other than that Buyer Beware!! P.S. NM does list on their website every landowner that gets tags with phone number. At least you know who they are can try to make contact. 4WD: Here is information in regards to the Landowner tags in Utah. Yes, you can contact the Operators directly which is what I would recommend doing: https://wildlife.utah.gov/cwmu.html You can apply for these through the public draw. Non residents can buy tags through the landowner or an agent. Good Luck!

Thanks for all of the replies Jason and RAR60, thanks for your insight into Huntin Fool. I am familiar more with Colorado having lived there three different times. The best Ranching for Wildlife ranches in CO are booked for the next five years. I don’t know anything about Colorado land owner tags except for the few phone calls I have made in the past. Like most things unless you have insight and a contact who has knowledge and experience the CO landowner tags are a crap shoot. Most of the Utah CWMU’s are run by outfitters so probably not any hidden gems or secrets there. The big outfitters have most of the well known ranches tied up. New Mexico probably has the most options. If anyone has more knowledge about Utah that you don’t want to put on the open forum please feel free to PM me.

4WD: I believe I spoke with you a bit via PM a bit about Utah. With that said, I do have a friend who runs a ranch up here that might have elk tags available. He is honest and I would certainly trust him as I have know him and his family for more than 20 years. I could pass you on his contact info. if you would like. Just send me a PM. I am not sure how he is running his hunts as I have not spoke with him recently. Good Luck!

Can't speak about HF... For NM tags one guy that seems to be in the know and has access to many tags is Mark from the Archery Shoppe. If interested, shoot me a PM and I can share his contact info. I have bought multiple tags through him.
