I love my 25/06. 100gr ballistic tips and you can't go wrong. Just remeber shot placement. Recoil is light, I have taken kudu, gemsbok, and zebra with mine all with a single bullet. Those were the largest animals, also antelope and plenty of whitetails.

I agree w/Scrappy. My favorite 25-06 deer load is the 100 gr. ballistic tip. I use a fairly moderate load @ about 3270 in a very light 22" barrel. I do not try to shoot end to end (starting from the wrong end).

I would go with a 25-06 as well. I am not a fan of the 270 although I have owned a few over the years.

In my 25-06, I use 100 grain Nosler Partitions for big game and they really do the job on big whitetails and mule deer. The benefit of the Partition over the Ballistic Tip on big game is the added assurance you get if you have a bad angle or hit a big bone at close range (BT's can be very fragible in this situation). For coyotes, the 85 grain Nosler BT is superb. [Razz]

Frankly, I would choose the six of one over the half dozen of the other. [Wink]

Then again, I like the chocolate over the vanilla on some days, and the vanilla over the chocolate on the others.

Do you get my drift?

I am going to go against the grain and back the .270 on this one. Why? Personal preference...I like the thought of a 130 gr bullet--BalTip, Partition, or other, at 3100+ fps. Mostly, you can't go wrong with either as a deer gun.

I shoot both and let me say they are most exellent rounds for deer. I feel a 25/05 loaded with 100gr. bullets for deer is beening reduced to a "super" 243-6mm class gun. There is about 300fps. difference between them with 100gr. bullets, over 300yds the better SD. and BC. of the 6s are comming on stronger, I dought a deer can tell much difference. The arguement that everyboby makes for the 257Rob. over the 6s is a heaver bullet, why isn't it also true with the 25/06. Again ,with a 100gr. bullet the 25/06 is a heck of a deer round. I just feel it is better with a sharp-pointed 117-120gr. bullet at long range.

The same thing applies for the 270, at extended ranges the 130s pack a good punch. I guess one could carry it farther and us the 150s at extreme range. The other thing is if elk are in the picture as they are for me the 270 gets even better looking.

Really who wants to choose? Own them both. Pete [Wink]

My current smallest rifle for deer hunting is a .270 BAR which I dearly love, I've got several friends with the 25'06 and it's a tremendous round for deer. Most of them are shooting around 120 gr. loads I believe. Even though the 270 is a light kicker the 25'06 is even lighter, I don't think you could go wrong with either one.
