PostDriverNew Mexico Notifications Going Out
New Mexico draw results are being emailed to the lucky recipients now. I go notification of success in elk and deer draws; haven't heard yet about ibex and antelope.
Their website doesn't show the results yet, as of a few minutes ago.

Last year I drew 36 2nd rifle, tough terrain but great hunt, lots of elk. This year I drew 36 muzzleloader.

muygrandeeuge, I put in for muzzy as well but happy that I got rifle as a consolation prize. Great unit to hunt AFTER the wealthy guys run the big boyz out of the reservation. Yeah some tough mountains but like you say nice numbers and pretty country.
Best to you and the muzzy.

PostDriverLooks like a few AR folks are going to be elk hunting in 36

. I drew 1st rifle...Oct 16. Now I'm praying for a late rut ! I can also stay in my cabin in Ruidoso, although we'll be camping in the outback once season starts.
Also 2B first rifle for deer. That'll be handy...Oct 16 and Oct 23 openers...just drive from one to the other.
Euge, please let us know how it's going in 36 ML. I'm following you!
Now if I can just find my mountain legs and lungs...
I was told there were alot of bulls still bugling during the 1st rifle hunt last year. It seems crazy, but the bull I killed last year on 10/31 was screaming his fool head off!
Good luck to everyone.

Austin HunterBeen putting in since 2002 for Elk in NM; no luck again this year.
Probably going to Idaho next year in the Selway - over the counter with an outfitter and can rifle hunt the rut.
Got drawn for Oryx in NM and Moose in Alaska, though, this year; so probably a good thing I didn't get drawn for elk.

We didn't get drawn for non-resident antelope.

There are some monsters in the Selway!

I do have a bit of an advantage with the speed goats. A couple of ranchers I know will give me a permit for the asking. Then I must drive almost 15 minutes to go hunt!

Good hunting,

Pretty well? I'd say you scored! That 2B January hunt is a good one!

rcamugliaI drew 16A last archery elk and unit 24 last hunt rifle deer.
15 June 2010, 02:46
double kDesertram,
Scored pretty well. I live in unit 2 so I will be in my backyard. This is the first time I have drawn this tag in about 6 yrs. Start scouting Thanksgiving weekend until the hunt.
15 June 2010, 04:10
DesertRamI grew up in unit 2 and remember fondly my high shool days hunting deer with an OTC rifle tag. Those day are gone! I killed my first mule deer (rifle and bow) there many years ago. I last hunted up there in 2007, when I killed a pretty nice 5x3 during the second rifle hunt. I quit applying that year and shifted over to the desert muleys closer to home.

ACRecurveThere are some desert muley bucks in the 34-40" spread range. Very impressive deer...but I'd rather hunt in the mountains than in the sand.
Good hunting,
Andy

rcamugliaI've hunted 2b quite a lot.
The problem with the unit is that there are very few resident deer. You won't see any big bucks till the weather in Colorado turns bad enough to drive them south. They rut there and if you put in for a January bowhunt you'll see some Daddys....
21 June 2010, 18:18
KenatiDad and I got our 1st choice deer tags. We got lucky.
