Hello everyone. I'm new to the forum and have already gotten a lot of real good advice from the members. Thank you.

The reason I'm posting is be because I have always wondered if a C&R season (curios and relics) for deer hunting would be a good idea. Wether combined with the muzzleloader seasons, or on their own schedule. After all, most of the C&R rifles are more primitave than the modern muzzleloaders that have their own season, (in some states). I usually use old C&R rifles during the regular Wisconsin gun deer season, but would like to use them during the ML season, as well.

What do you think? Good idea or bad? I think it would be fun, and also introduce more people to the world of C&R guns.

When I first saw your post I thought to myself, 'how does one catch and release when hunting...?' That'd be a neat trick. Wink

I think it would be a kick. But where do you draw the line? Some of the new compunds shoot 60+, one guy on Monster Muleys claims 97 yard shot and kill on an elk, black powder rifles equal some center fires. Technology I guess. So as far as I am concerned those weapons equal or exceede many C&R's.

But then an a3 03, open sights, or a k98, or even a Garand would be fun. They are all C&R, I might actually try my Garand on deer this year.

I like your idea.

You'd have to get the legislature to write the law so it reads something like: "Curio and Relic season - only eligible firearms will classified as 'curios and relics' by BATF and must be in original condition and caliber without any modification. Any modification from original condition will reclassify firearm as sporter and be eligible for general rifle season only."

The reason I say that is because all the rifle I hunt with began life as a C&R Mauser and were subsequently sporterized. I would think that hunting with a sporterized C&R would skirt the spirit of what you're proposing. Allowing only true C&R firearms would be kinda like having a primitive muzzleloader season or preventing the general population from using crossbows in archery season.

Just my take on the situation.
