Just trying to see if I can post a photo on this site. It's been awhile. If the picture works this is my lope taken in Montana this year. Used 270 Win with Nosler BT bullets. Was a public land hunt. Greg

Greg, the pics are up and look Good! That is a very nice goat, especially for Montana. Whereabouts in MT did you hunt? I've been to Fort Belknap a few times--desolate area that.....good goats few and far between, but I did find a 14 1/2" buck, really big for there they told me. Congrats on a great Antelope and good going on public ground.

Thanks for the comments. To answer a few questions I was hunting in the Ekalaka area in south east Montana. My rifle is an Encore in 270 Win. I was shooting 130 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips at about 3027 fps. The shot was taken at 164 lasered yards ( after he dropped). I was watching a small herd of 12 from about a mile away. After feeding for awhile they started heading in my general direction. I was hoping that when they hit a fence line I was sitting next to they would turn and come right at me. Instead they crossed the fence about 700-800 yards in front of me and started to leave. About a mile straight in front of them someone had left a truck parked in plane view. I was hoping that when they saw the truck they would turn in my direction. The herd dropped out of sight so I dropped into a drainage cut and moved about 150 yards. When the herd reappeared out of a draw they were comming right at me. There were 3 bucks of which I would say 2 were shooters. I lined up on the best one and shot at 164 yards. It was almost a head on shot . The bullet hit him in the neck, took out the wind pipe and spine and exited where the neck and shoulders join. Dropped right there. His horns are 13.5" and he has several character bumps on both sides. My hunting buddy I went with got a bigger one the same morning a couple of miles from me.(14.75") Greg

Amen to that brother! My grandparents live 7 miles SW of Dodson on the reservation and I love it the way it is. I took my goat's off their ranch this year with the same bullet I believe. I used my 270 wsm with 130gr BT's and planned on making a long shot. Ended up within 80 yds. and made a hole twice the size of my hand in his neck. He was only 12" but I was happy to have him after a bigger one eluded me earlier in the day. He was quite a bit bigger but just too wiley for me. Congrats on your buck though! Tas and George, I hear you, the isolation is really a sweet thing--a sort of surreal peace out there miles away from your hunting partners in the cold prarie.....I wouldn't like it all the time, but if I had a house there to go to at the end of the day............
