Got my first elk yesterday!

Yesterday morning got me my first elk...a small 4x4 bull at 6:30am!

Was walking in, later than I would like due to a road closure for road construction, and saw a herd of about a dozen animals walking towards the timber. I held my ground and let them move on up, as I knew a pursuit wasn't likely. After they got up and into the timber, I continued in a bit further and saw a group of four moving up the same route as the previous herd. I ducked up into the timber and positioned myself on their path and they walked right up to me. Shot the one bull at about 50 yards thru the chest with a killing lung shot. Didn't go down so I put another two in him...the last, literally as he fell. That last shot wasn't needed obviosly, but he fell just as I fired. Two lung hits and the thrird into the shoulder as he fell...was higher than I wanted due to him going down.

Hope to eventually get some pics, but will be a while...

I am pleased!

Good job, lad!

Hopefully the recent cold and snow here will help and I'll be as fortunate as you!

Out fucking standing! It's good to hear that you didn't tag an elk that someone else shot, like you did last year.

So was this experience of actually tagging an animal that you shot, better then last years circle jerk?

Awesome job! I can't wait to go for elk myself in the next couple of years. What rifle and caliber did you use?

Good Job. Nothing like the first elk, deer, whatever in the species.

Thanks for the offer to help me earlier this year. We went North-East of you elk hunting and went 2 for 3 on 6 point bulls. I also shot a nice mature old 4 point east of Alpine. Gotta love Star Valley to Alpine.

Congrats again

No matter if its a bull or a cow the first one is pretty darned impressive when its on the ground isnt it??

Good job. Any elk taken fair chase and ethically is in my opinion a trophy.

Good job. A good friend from Minnesota came by last night showing off his first ever elk taken near Sheridan, Mt. It's a 6x6, and was he ever happy. This is his first after several tries.
